Hi I’m not sure what category to use but I have been using Brave for a few years now. I love it’s privacy features and it has been years without seeing an AD. My question is, why can’t someone develop a VPN or something similar that limits Chrome’s functionality that comes to these things? I want to use their features such as Sync and greater customization. Brave is good but in my eyes, only good for one thing: privacy. I understand this is the main concern but I was wondering if I could get a similar functionality in Chrome. If this product is truly great for the user then it shouldn’t matter to Brave where their protection takes place right? Can someone help me out?
What are you talking about specifically? Brave already offers Brave VPN, which you can learn more about here: https://brave.com/firewall-vpn/
For desktop users, there’s also the option to use Private with Tor: https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018121491-What-is-a-Private-Window-with-Tor-Connectivity
So if you’re looking for a VPN or proxy, Brave provides both options—one free and one paid.
What exactly are you referencing when you mention “limiting Chrome’s functionality”?
Brave also has a Sync feature. You can learn more about it here:

If you mean syncing with Google services, Google restricted access to their API in 2021. You can read more about that here: https://blog.chromium.org/2021/01/limiting-private-api-availability-in.html
Oh, just noticed main part of what you said that I missed earlier. But I see Mattches from Brave is responding, so he’ll likely hit it better. If not, I’ll circle back to answer the key aspect of what you hit, which is:
Moved this thread to the Browser Feedback category.
@humanfriend22,
Not entirely sure what to say here. Also not so sure how bad the browser can be if you’ve been using it for years
As @Saoiray stated above, Brave does offer a VPN service and is also compatible with 3rd party VPN services (just like Chrome). Brave also offers Sync — even if the Brave Sync functionality isn’t exactly the same as Chromes (there is no Brave “account” due to the fact that accounts can be hacked/stolen).
For the customization bit, can you be specific about what customization Chrome offers that Brave doesn’t? Themes/colors, NTP background images, compatibility with nearly all extensions — all things offered in both Brave and Chrome. I’d actually argue that Brave has more customization options, as we offer things that Chrome does not, including (but not limited to) option to use vertical or horizontal tabs (Settings —> Appearance --> Tabs
) or the “Split view” option (currently in Nightly).
It matters because Google/Chrome continues to make a product that tracks and shares your data. It cannot be guaranteed that in Chrome, even with all the 3rd party privacy/security extensions installed (which introduces it’s own set of problems) that your data will remain private.
Brave is open source and can be (and is) regularly audited — meaning that if your data was being sent somewhere to be sold or for some other purpose, somebody would be able to easily call us out for it. Additionally, unlike Chrome, we go out of our way to ensure that we remove any tracking or telemetry implemented in the Chromium engine that would send your data anywhere without your consent.
To summarize — Brave offers almost all the same functionality as Chrome does and more, with the added benefit of out-of-the-box privacy and security features that are easy for anyone to use.
Hope this helps.
Hi, thank you for all your answers. I apologize for coming across hostile or attacking Brave and their products.
I greatly appreciate the tracker blocking Brave does but it wasn’t my priority when I first installed it (the superior ad blocking was) and although I feel a little uneasy thinking about going back to Chrome its just not one of my worries (for now).
After a bit more research, it seems like I can do a bit tweaking to make Brave look like Chrome so I’ll definitely explore that more and see where it gets me. Sorry for making this impulsive post.
P.S. By Chrome VPN, I meant one that blocks ads through the requests but tracker blocking and ad blocking probably go much deeper than that.
