White windows when merging tabs

  • open browser
  • open multiple tabs
  • drag one tab to new window
  • merge them back together

→ For me this always creates a blank white window where the merged window was.

  • this white window is basically stuck to my screen and I cant move or close it
  • it stays even when all brave windows are closed and when the browser itself is closed as well
  • the only way for me to remove the white blank windows is by either stopping brave from task manager or restart windows

Another thing that also happens sometimes, not sure if this is related to the issue, but when i start the brave browser, sometimes it just opens several random empty tabs in a few windows instead of opening my previously opened tabs

I experiencing something similar - without merging tabs (? I assume you mean ‘groups’). All that’s required to trigger the problem is that I move any given tab off the application window, and back on. eg: I grab a tab and move it either direction to reorder the tab play order, but I slip a bit and the tab goes over the top of the app screen. Bam! Phantom white window.

It’s been happening since last update.

I’ll second this report.

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): 1. 2. 3.

  1. Open Brave
  2. Open two tabs
  3. Expand sidebar; I have my tabs setting to put them on the left side - not sure if repeatable with top tabs;
  4. Click a tab and drag until it separates into its own window.
  5. Click the tab from the new window and consolidate back to the original window.

Actual Result (gifs and screenshots are welcome!):

White painted artifact on screen (multiple shown here due to repro confirmation)

Expected result:

No artifacts.

Reproduces how often:

Consistently.

Brave Version(about:brave):

1.70.119

Reproducible on current live release (yes/no):

Yes, assuming above is current.

@_tanoshi @cybes @_tanoshi I have tried to replicate due to another post that was made. It’s not something I’m able to see happen yet. I’d like all of you to test as mentioned at my reply below:

https://community.brave.com/t/brave-tab-bug-1-70-119-chromium-129-0-6668-70/571516/2?u=saoiray

Windows 10 Pro 22H2 - IS : 19045.4780

It also happens in private window and new profile.

I tried it on another PC with the same operating system and it happens again.

It happens even if I remove my extensions and try.

Brave Version : 1.70.119 Chromium: 129.0.6668.70

Bug video : https://youtu.be/1dbYKaRoCCE

When I detach the tab from the browser and then reattach it, a separate white window appears and cannot be closed except through the task manager.

@NooXRii can’t be replicated on my Windows 11 Pro. Which OS are you using?

Also, I notice you’re using extensions which may be contributing to your issue. Could you try in private window and see if it happens there? Or better yet, create a second browser profile (without extensions and not changing settings) and see if the issue persists on it?

At this point it’s likely either an extension, external program, or something messy with your GPU or graphics settings in general. It may even be some play between it all. However, it’s not seeming to be something happening within the browser itself. So main thing is having to figure out the “outlier” causing your issue.

Look, someone else had the same problem.

Yes, I know. I have already responded to topic with all three at White windows when merging tabs

Generally if it’s just browser only it happens a lot more. So things to find out right now are such as:

  1. Which GPU you and they are using? (such as NVIDIA, AMD, etc)

  2. If any changes to brave://flags

  3. Can you test if this also happens with Brave Beta or Brave Nightly

  4. If this also happens with Chrome.

Actually, went ahead and merged everyone over here instead of bouncing between. But if we can try to grab details from you all, it would be helpful. At least trying to sort through what we can. Then will see if someone from Support such as @Mattches may be able to follow-up if we can’t get it figured out.

Every time a tab is taken off a Brave window, and then reattached, it leaves a white block on the desktop. The only way to remove these blocks are to go into Task Manager and end the Brave Browser Task, that are using 50-250mb +, even when all other browser windows are closed.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Open a new browser tab.
  2. Add a second tab on the same browser window.
  3. Drag either of the tabs off the first window.
  4. Reattach it to the original browser window.

Expected result:
The expected result should be that the tab rejoins the first window opened, without any additional graphics being locked on the screen.

  1. NVIDIA (Driver last version)
  2. I didn’t change anything
  3. There’s nothing wrong with Nightly. (I tried now)
  4. There is no such problem in Chrome.

Can you go to NVIDIA Control Panel and take a look around?

Within these settings, a lot of people have had issues with things like Antialiasing, Multi-Frame Sampled AA (MFAA), etc.

There may be more to test, but if we can get all of the questions answered from everyone, it might help point in the right direction. But might have to wait for official support, such as Mattches, Evan123, or Steeven to pop in and follow-up.

I’ve fiddled with the settings, changed them but nothing changed. Let’s wait for the other people as you said.

Thanks for your quick answers.

Quick summary of info requested from all having this issue (so you don’t have to read through everything):

  1. Does this also happen in private window or new profile?

  2. Can you test if this also happens with Brave Beta or Brave Nightly

  3. Does this issue also happen in Chrome?

  4. What GPU are you using (are all of you on NVIDIA?)

  5. If on NVIDIA, check NVIDIA Control Panel settings for Brave. People have had issues with a variety of settings but specifically Antialiasing , Multi-Frame Sampled AA (MFAA), or while using G-sync.

Beyond that, just make sure you’ve shared which OS (I think all of you are Windows 10?) and which version of Brave. I’ll try to get Support to follow-up, but at least wanted to get some of the general troubleshooting and info.

You could also check out brave://gpu but we’ll hold off on that unless/until Support guides to anything in particular they want or need to see from it.

EDIT
Also want to remind everyone it’s currently Friday. Chances are if none of them reply today, then we won’t hear from anyone until next week as they don’t tend to work on the weekends or American holidays.

I’ll go ahead and loop in @Evan123 and @steeven as well just in case, as I never know schedules and hoping they might have some input.

I posted this to the Japanese community. It has been reported, but I hope it will be fixed soon.

Thank you all for reporting and thank you for keeping this all together @Saoiray.
While I can’t reproduce on my end, I have gone ahead and opened this issue for this:

Here’s the requested info if it helps. No worries on the speed of the fix. I don’t wanna work weekends either.

  • Issue reproduced with both vertical and horizontal tab setting.

  • Issue reproduced in both normal and private window.

  • Issue reproduced with all extensions disabled.

  • Issue does not occur in Chrome or Edge.

  • Issue occurs after resetting all settings in brave://flags

  • I didn’t see any candidate overlay applications running. I closed Windows PowerToys and still experienced the issue.

  • Issue occurs after uninstall / reinstall of program. I did not clear Windows application data.

  • Issue did NOT manifest in Brave Beta or Nightly applications. Perhaps this is a telling piece of data? I can do a clean install if you want; just let me know which folders to blow away.

I was also able to reproduce on two machines:
