I recently started getting a white screen when trying to watch YouTube videos on my Chromebook. I can hear the audio, but there’s no video. If I click on the 3 dots by the Youtube video the sub menu opens up and the video will suddenly appear. (The problem is I can’t even see the 3 dots because the entire screen is white). The only thing that changed was I did an update on my Chromebook.
Operating System and Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu):
Chromebook, Brave Version: 1.67.123
Additional Information:
YouTube videos work fine on the Brave browser on my Android phone. I just started having the problem on my Chromebook.
So I discovered something new, on at least 90% of the Youtube videos I try to watch I get a blank white screen with audio, but for the remaining 10% of Youtube videos it works fine and I can see the video and audio.
I have no idea what is causing this.
Again, I am only experiencing this problem on my Chromebook using the Brave app. When I use the Brave app on my Android phone the Youtube videos work fine.
So here’s what I’ve learned so far. If I go to brave://flags and DISABLE “Hardware-accelerated video Decode” AND “Hardware-accelerated video Encode” then most of the Youtube videos will work fine on my Chromebook. Some Youtube videos won’t play and will display a Youtube playback error message. I have no idea what’s causing this.
But I know if I go to brave://flags and ENABLE “Hardware-accelerated video decode/encode” then ALL Youtube videos will turn the entire screen on my Chromebook White with the audio playing in the background.
When the entire screen is white and I blindly scroll down while a Youtube video is playing the Youtube page & comments will suddenly appear. But if I scroll up again where the video is playing the entire screen will turn white again. So the screen only turns white if the video is being viewed/displayed in the browser.
Hopefully this info will help the Brave developers for their next update.
i have exactly same problem with acer spin 314 chromebook Appversion Brave 1.67.136, Chromium 126.0.6478.186
Operativsystem Android 13; Build/R126-15886.44.0
When you go to brave://flags you have to go to the Search bar and enter the word “accelerated.” Then you’ll see the options to Disable the hardware-accelerated video encode/Decode.
