Basically, it’s been a few days, without any specific reason (no pc update, no change in Brave browser or on Steam etc), that trailer videos from Steam.com won’t launch on my Brave browser.
I tried a bit everything I knew: CTRL F5, then complete clean up of the cache, I tried a private session (so not logged in), also my other throwaway browsers (Edge and Firefox) where it works normally, and finally this morning I complete uninstalled Brave (lost all my settings, history, everything, I thought might as well), and reinstalled clean, and before even logging in on Steam I tried: still nothing.
It feels like it is linked to Brave itself? Basically I only have a black screen, the video player from steam (with the play, pause buttons, volume, etc) do not even appear. Black screen entirely. Screenshots, them, appear, though.
I know that doesn’t help in any way but I have the exact same problem.
When I was looking for solutions I realized that most people experience that problem with the Steam Client itself and in some cases it works on Chrome but not in Edge and vice versa. Few people even mention Brave.
I also tried pretty much anything. It’s very strange because it started like 2-3 weeks ago completely out of the blue. No system or software changes/updates or anything.
For anyone trying to help, the problem definitely isn’t caused by any extension.
That’s one of the few things I can say with 100% certainty.
Thanks for the additional testimony, Heisenbear. And I concur with what you say: I uninstalled entirely Brave, and reinstalled WITHOUT extensions, so it is not linked to those indeed.
Hopefully someone from Brave sees this? I fear we will never get any answer, but I can say if that’s the case, I will simply quit Brave: I use Steam everyday, and I am not letting a browser preventing me from using it.
You’re welcome
I just right-clicked on a (potential) steam store video and opened the console.
Something interesting caught my eye that may help finding a solution.
There was a little error message pertaining to loading a video on a store page:
“Failed to load resource: net::ERR_UNEXPECTED_PROXY_AUTH”
I thought I’d post it here. Who knows, might help with the research ^^
Just checked Steam on Windows and macOS and videos seem to be working fine for me.
Can either of you visit the Steam store and try to view a video, then right-click on the video and Inspect it, then click the Console tab in the resulting dev tools window and share any output that appears there?
Thanks a lot Mattches for the support, appreciated. Same for Heisenbear, really appreciate your reactivity. Here goes mine:

I answered but a bot put my answer on hold because of content issue I suppose (I copy pasted the console error messages, I should not have). I was saying thank you to both of you, and my console message https://imgur.com/a/huE26OF
Yeah so looks like you’re both seeing the same error — can you both tell me whether or not you see the same behavior with Shields down on Steam? Going to ping @fanboynz to take a look here as well.
PS @Hem not sure if you just clicked on a random game to view the video but I played through Sea of Stars recently — excellent game
I have the same issue with the same errors. I tried to delete cookies but there was no change. Also its the same with or without shield and its the same in private window.
At lest for me, videos work fine on steam client tho.
I can confirm what Laya said. Turning off Shields does not make any difference.
Also deactivating all the filters like “Fanboy’s Annoyances” etc does nothing unfortunately.
Thank you @Mattches (and everyone contributing). I want to reiterate the fact that yes, everything has been tested 1) on other browsers (it works), 2) in private session, 3) without any extension, and 4) without shield (I never have shield for websites like Steam).
Hopefully we get some help soon!
Out of topic: @Mattches No randomness with me! I just finished (100%) Sea of Stars and sadly gave it a C+ on Steam… just published my review this morning. Glad you liked it more than me though I preferred their previous one, Messenger, and for a tribute to Chrono Trigger and other games from that era, in the same vein I prefer a thousand times CrossCode, much better. Cheers!
@Hem I also just tested by going and I’m able to watch trailers of all games with no issues. I didn’t login in my testing, but let me ask if you ever checked if that mattered? Also want to confirm we are speaking of https://store.steampowered.com/ and not steam.com as mentioned in the original post, right? I noticed your one that you shared was for Contraband Police, which I then tested via https://store.steampowered.com/app/756800/Contraband_Police/. Everything loaded perfectly.
Let me ask:
Are you using a vpn or proxy? If so, have you tried disabling or changing it?
Have you made any changes to DNS settings?
Have you ever changed anything at brave://flags?
Did you ever try Brave Beta or Brave Nightly to see if it works there?
Also, it seems you never did mention, but what OS and version of Brave are you using? Obviously assuming Windows since labeled as such, but Windows 10, 11, or what?
I saw, people were sharing screenshots from console log tab but nothing from “issue” tab. So here it is: https://imgur.com/a/1Bh6uEH
I don’t know if it will help narrow the problem down or not.
Same issue. I have nothing new to add, it’s the same ERR_UNEXPECTED_PROXY_AUTH error in Console. I’m on Fedora 40, Brave Version 1.70.123 Chromium: 129.0.6668.89 (Official Build) (64-bit). Steam videos work fine on Windows 11 on the same machine.
Hey, I’ll also give you my answers quickly, as we seem to have the exact same problem. Hope it is of some help. I’m on Windows 10 btw and I’m using Brave
Version 1.70.123 Chromium: 129.0.6668.89 (Official Build 64-Bit)
I’m using a VPN sometimes but of course I wasn’t using it when accessing Steam.
Yes, switched it to Google Public DNS some time ago. But I also switched it back just to see if that’s the problem. As you can guess, it wasn’t.
I think I took a look at it. I’m not sure anymore if I changed something. I just remember feeling overwhelmed
But I also uninstalled and re-installed the browser and resetted all the options etc.
So no matter what I might have changed, it should have worked after the reset, right?
No, because the videos on Steam did actually work the first few weeks trying Brave, so I assumed the issue had to be something else.
And no, it doesn’t matter if I’m logged into Steam or not.
Update: Got the same issue on Brave Beta but it does indeed work on Nightly.
