(v1.18.70 Changes) Brave ads received reduce drastically to 5 ads per day

@EthanHunt,
There never was a bug and the browser has never limited anyone to 5 ads per day. If you’re referring to the max number of ads one can receive ads per hour, that has not changed either and I will note, again, that the setting you adjust is not “How many ads you will see per hour”, it is “What is the maximum number of ads Brave can show you per hour?”. Meaning you’re not guaranteed five per hour, you’re just setting the ceiling.

stop please , every people has the same problem, after 5 ads -> “You have exceeded the allowed ads per day” , this PROBLEM is since the last update with older version it WORKS !

Yes the daily ad limit seems to have decreased to 5.

where is the note on this? where is the transparency with this way of doing things?

@Mattches
I too had the impression over the weekend something had changed and then I found this topic.

I decided to conduct a little experiment. On a Brave setup (windows PC) which had not updated yet I created two new wallets, one set to 2 ads per hour and one set to 5 ads per hour. I used this PC for a period of approximately 6 hours and receive 8 and 15 ads respectively.

The next day after updating Brave I used the PC again for 6 hours in a very similar manner. I received 2 and 5 ads respectively. Crucially, all these ads were received in the first hour of using the PC/browser.

Now this could all be a big coincidence, but I think it is fair to say that from a user’s point of view it looks like something has changed and it is related to the latest update.(1.18.70). It is also fair to say that it looks like the daily and hourly limits somehow got mixed up.

Can someone tell me how to downgrade? Because I know it will take them a week to respond and another week to fix so better downgrade the browser and use it!

@klompje @Ray.Breslin @Elson @kayero etc. Hi, I work on the ads team here at Brave, would you be willing to screen-share so I can help diagnose if there is an issue. If so, can you please reach out to me at [email protected], so we can arrange a call? Thank you in advance, Terry

For everyone here, it would be very helpful if we could get someone setup with @tmancey to screenshare as it’s the best way for the team to see exactly what’s going on and what the issue is (if any).

Also @klompje, the experiment you ran is not giving a clear picture of the system. If you read our Ads FAQ, you’ll note that, again, the setting you’re referring to is not "ads per hour":

I set Ads to display X ads per hour - why am I not receiving X ads per hour?

Please note that this setting is a ceiling rather than a floor.

That is; it does not dictate how many ads you will see per hour – it dictates the maximum number of ads you may see per hour. This number will always fall between 0 and X , inclusive.

:point_up: With this in mind, your experiment only exemplified this point by showing that ads do not appear at the same, predetermined rate.

@Mattches @tmancey

I am aware if the FAQ. That’s why I included the information that the 2 and 5 ads all appeared in the first hour, and nothing for the next 5 hours. I also know that between day one and day two I did not change anything apart from updating Brave to the latest version. As I said, maybe all a big coincidence but it doesn’t feel like it. Note that I didn’t use the word ‘bug’ or ‘fault’ or anything like that. I am just sharing an observation. Although it would appear from posts by others (hihouhou) that when they look at the trace information (I have no idea how to do that) that after 5 ads they see a message displaying “You have exceeded the allowed ads per day”. Now that would be a clear indication that the hourly limit is being taken as the daily limit.

Screen sharing is not possible due to IT policies in place. I am hoppy to send you any logs or other information that might help you.

So for you , you can reprodiuce it ? really ? the helpful is to enable again logs… just that !

This sounds somewhat cool but how would that fix the fact that everybody is having the same issue?

I hope in Brave team someone is able to use strace command or just enable logs for validating after 5 ads per 24h and not a day, the message is “You have exceeded the allowed ads per day”
I’m not a dev but did someone check https://github.com/brave/brave-core/compare/v1.18.70...v1.17.75 ?

This is a bug in new version or brave reduced from 20 ads/day to only 5 ads/day.

If this is a bug, then it is specific to certain users as this thread is the only one I see reporting this specifically. I myself, on both macOS and Win10 systems, have already seen more than 5 ads today and on more than one browser instance:

This is why @tmancey asked if someone would be willing to screen share and help us diagnose the issue as it is the most efficient way to see what’s going on under the hood for users encountering this.

Please refer to the line that you think made this change, thanks?

I’m only a sysadmin, I just add it for helping

please, say us how enabling logs again, @sampson said it’s possible

I am from CANADA, my system is windows 10 , brave version is 1.18.70.
I have attached screenshot of my last 3 days ads , i am only getting ONLY 5 ads per day after upgrade to 1.18.70.

Having access to an impacted instance of Brave means being able to more quickly identify the issue impacting that user. This is likely to reveal the general issue impacting most (if not all) other users. As such, if anybody is seeing only 5 ads per day, and is able to join @tmancey on a screenshare, it would be immensely helpful to us here at Brave in resolving this issue.
