Updating an old version of Brave (for Mac) -- when downloading is the correct version determined automatically?

I’ve been using the last Beta version available for my MacBook Pro (OS Catalina) but would like to switch to the last compatible release version.

If I click on a download option here, will the correct version of Brave (release version) be downloaded automatically? If not, how should go about downloading it?

Alternatively, since I still have an old release version (116.1.57.64,) from 9/12/23, if I open that will I be prompted for the correct version to download – i.e., the latest one that will work on my laptop (again, it will have to be compatible with no later version than Mac OS Catalina)?

Thanks.

Release v1.69.168 (Chromium 128.0.6613.138)

MacOS 10.14 and below are NOT supported anymore

That was the last version before Brave Browser required MacOS 11 as the minimum.

@289wk . . . THANKS!

What steps do I have to take to replace the current Brave Release Version in my Applications folder with Release v1.69.168 (Chromium 128.0.6613.138) – ?

Installation, you can figure. But prior to installation, in order to completely remove older versions and traces of them:

Where Brave Browser is installed:

/Applications/Brave Browser.app

/Users/username/Library/Application Support/BraveSoftware

/Users/username/Library/BraveSoftware

/Users/username/Library/Caches/BraveSoftware

/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.brave.Browser.plist

And the “Brave Browser Helper . . . .diag” crash reports within:

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/

After you install and have imported bookmarks (from wherever you save them as a bookmarks.html file), please practice a routine of backing up Brave Browser bookmarks by using the Bookmarks Manager > Export button (that produces “bookmarks.html” files, that ought to be saved anywhere but NOT inside some Brave Browser folder.

IMHO, a worthwhile backup application for Mac OS and Windows OS and mobile devices - GoodSync:

@289wk . . . Thanks again.

Did you mean to open all of the locations (the 6 folders) in the list you included and manually delete all the files in them (prior to installing Release v1.69.168) – ?

(Nothing to see here. I misread something.)

@mattches Can you advise what I should do to install the latest Brave Release version that my MacBook Pro can handle (apparently, Release v1.69.168).

I already have an older Brave Release version in my Applications folder. Can I just run that and then follow what I assume will be the prompts to update that version? – i.e., will Brave automatically update to the latest ‘release’ version that’s compatible with my hardware and macOS?

Or do I need to download Release v1.69.168, then proceed with installation as if I don’t have any version of Brave (Release v.), in which case I assume the current Release version in my Appllcations folder will be overwritten?

Thanks.

i have been using a Beta version of Brave for a long time – the last Beta version that my hdw/sfw can use.

It has for some reason become unusable (having all kinds of problems with it).

My ‘solution’ to that is to switch to the latest Release version that’s compatible with my system.

What I meant to ask is how to best accomplish that so as not to lose any data associated with either the Beta version or the existing Release version I already have.

Take a look a the command line method for starting up Brave Browser:

You might get the Beta version of Brave running, and then back up your bookmarks and passwords.

And, if the “existing Release version” can also work, back up your bookmarks and passwords.

After saving all that data, remove the items - re the locations listed above.

Then make an effectively fresh installation, using the workable version of Brave Browser.

Thanks, the Beta version isn’t completely broken. It’s running but very poorly.

I haven’t tried to run the old Release version I have because I don’t know what to expect, given that there have been many later Release versions, most of which won’t be compatible with my hdw/sfw.

If Brave knows how to select the latest compatible version with given hdw/sfw that will presumably solve the issue – the version I have will just be updated to the latest one my system can use.

If it doesn’t then I will have to proceed differently, something I’ve never had to do before.

I understand about backing up the bookmarks prior to any new installation (I don’t use Brave’s internal password storage).

In an earlier reply of mine, I suggested that you use the

“Release v1.69.168 (Chromium 128.0.6613.138)”
https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases/tag/v1.69.168

installation.

The list of stable releases:

You would use the “Brave-Browser-x64.dmg” package, if you know that your Mac laptop is a 64-bit system. In a Terminal.app window (the command line) enter:

getconf LONG_BIT

If the answer is 64, you know your MacOS kernel is 64-bit.

You would use the “Brave-Browser-universal.dmg” package, IF the answer is not 64 . . . or even if the answer is 64.

IOW, the “Brave-Browser-x64.dmg” package is ONLY for 64-bit.

Thanks. getconf returned “64” but my reading (or misreading) of your last reply was to use the x64 dmg in that case, except that you then advised using the “universal” dmg “even if the answer is 64”.

Did you just mean that either one will work with a 64-bit Mac?

Also, at Github I didn’t find anything clickable in the listings. Where can one find either or both of these dmg files? And do I really need them if I’m just updating an old Release version of Brave that’s already in my Applications folder?

Tagging @Mattches.

@mk7z,

Yes, either will work for you.

The .dmg is just going to run the installer for that version. As others have stated before, please backup your passwords and bookmarks before updating just to ensure they are safe.

The files themselves are on the page linked, just scroll down to Assets — you can’t miss it:

Thanks, @Mattches.

Since I already have an old Brave Release version in my Applications folder (v.116.1.57.64) can I just open it and then ‘update’ from within that version to the latest Brave version that’s compatible with OS Catalina? (The latter is the last Mac OS that’s compatible with my old laptop, which still runs fine.)

I.e., do I even need to go through the dmg steps, which I would assume are for a new user of Brave?

I think that attempting to update will try to fetch the latest files and ultimately produce an error when the update is attempted. Just run the .dmg and you should be good to go.

@Mattches A funny thing happened on the way to trying to follow your instructions.

I had to open my existing Release version to save (export) the ‘bookmarks’. (Is there a way to do that without opening the app?)

Once I did that, automatic updating began.

However, I ended up with the same version that @289wk said was the one I needed (Release v1.69.168 / Chromium 128.0.6613.138).

So apparently circumventing the dmg (accidentally) worked out!

Thanks again to both of you.

Perfect — glad to hear everything worked out for you and it’s good to confirm that behavior.
