Updates are really getting ridiculous

So, now Brave is telling me (AGAIN) that I need to update. Then it says it can’t update. Then it says I need to reinstall. Then I click on the blue reinstall button, and it directs me to install Google Chrome.

So, you want me to use Chrome? Seriously? How about NO? I don’t like or want Chrome. I don’t want Google that involved in my business. And if I wanted to use Chrome I’d be using it and not Brave.

Seriously, WTF? I feel like I’m being punked. I don’t even know how to update anymore. But apparently someone has figured it out, because while I was searching for help for this issue before posting I came across someone reporting a bug with their profile info not importing correctly.

Can we not just get easy updates to BRAVE without being told to reinstall or switch browsers???

Wow, that sounds really aggravating. I’ve not experienced this on Mac, Windows, or Linux, though. What version of Brave and OS are you using? Maybe we can figure out how to make it stop.

Yeah, it is VERY aggravating. I’m using Windows 7. This is the version info from About Brave: Version 0.57.18 Chromium: 71.0.3578.80 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Oh, and About says I’m up to date. I’m so confused right now.

I can imagine.

So your version is a bit behind, which you probably expected/knew. Current (on Windows 10) is Version 0.61.51 Chromium: 73.0.3683.75 (Official Build) (64-bit).

What happens if you type brave://help in the address bar?

Brave is up to date.

Apologies for the inconveniences @Geo.

It’s a known issue. See Brave says it is not up to date and redirects me to Chrome

Thanks

Thanks!!! I never saw it when I did a search of the forum for Chrome.

Sorry, I realized you’d implicitly answered my question after posting the last message.

That’s weird. Could your firewall might be blocking connection to the update server?

Well, a way to fix it could be to make a backup copy of your user profile, then do what @eljuno suggests (download the latest release https://brave.com/download/, and run the downloaded installer).

I know it’s supposed to leave your profile alone, but it can’t hurt to back it up just in case. I did it like an hour ago when I was fixing something else. It’s been a long time since I’ve used Win7 and I don’t remember where the user profile is saved. In Win10 it’s in “C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser”

No worries.

I’ve already run the update and transferred profile info. Looks like everything is running smoothly and @eljuno’s suggestion fixed everything. I thank both of you for your help!
