The html file of exported bookmarks does not open

**Description of the issue: **

The html file containing the exported bookmarks from Brave browser shows a blank page when opened in any browser including Brave. When I import them nothing shows up as well.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Export bookmarks as an html file
  2. Try to open the file or import the bookmarks to any browser

Expected result:
A blank page if you open it
Nothing shows up if you import the file to a browser

Brave Version( check About Brave):
v1.41.100

Additional Information:
I really need to recover my bookmarks. I will be more than happy if I can solve it. I can send the file if you like.

@pokerface

Do you see your bookmarks, when you use the Brave Browser Bookmarks Manager?

The thing is I removed Brave browser from my old pc. I am using Brave browser and some others on my new pc. The result is the same. So, no I don’t.

@pokerface

The new PC . . . do you see your bookmarks, when you use the Brave Browser Bookmarks Manager?

I don’t see my old bookmarks. I only see the ones that I recently saved.

@pokerface

On your OLD PC, can you . . .

Copy the actual Bookmarks files to an attached USB drive.

Bookmarks and Bookmarks.bak files:

  • %LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Default\Bookmarks
  • %LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Default\Bookmarks.bak

I had removed Brave browser from my old pc. I assume those files are not available. Do you think those files will be available regardless? Because I have to travel to access to my old pc.

@pokerface

Do not assume that the actual Bookmarks files on the OLD PC, are not there . . . because . . . that would depend upon what type of UN-INSTALL of Brave Browser on that OLD PC, you ran.

The BraveSoftware folder (see path in previous reply) and its sub-folders/contents, may still exist. Worth a look.

If you find the files, then save them to a USB drive.

On your NEW PC, use the Brave Browser Bookmarks Manager to export the few, NEW bookmarks to a ‘bookmarks.html’ file - give it a filename that distinguishes the file as new: ‘bookmarks_NEWER.html’

Next, on the NEW PC, replace the two, relatively un-used files:

  • Bookmarks
  • Bookmarks.bak

. . . with the same-named files from the OLD PC.

OF COURSE, Brave Browser is not running, when you do that!

Then, on the NEW PC, start up Brave Browser and look over the [old, recovered] bookmarks, using the Bookmarks Manager.

Looks OK?

Then, import the few, new bookmarks from the ‘bookmarks_NEWER.html’ file.

Unfortunately, those bookmark files were gone even though some user data files were intact. What do I do now? What can I do about the html file in my hand? Can anyone recover that for me?
