Re-opening/rebooting: Brave does not remember previous windows sizes and locations

Description of the issue:
Re-opening/rebooting: Brave does not remember previous windows sizes and locations (multiple Brave windows opened in previous session - most often 3 Brave windows):

whenever i turn off my pc at night, i expect that the next morning, when i turn on the pc again, that the several Brave browsers remember where i had positioned them to reopen at the same locations with the last pages still on them. well, the brave browser does indeed remember my tabs, but more often than not, the brave browser will flash and try to open for maybe 1/3rd of a second, that’s estimating it at 0.3 seconds. Then, all signs of Brave disappear .

when i re-click the brave icon in my quick launch bar to reopen the brave browser, of course, all the tabs are now lost and i have to open up several brave browsers and carefully re-position them again. this is a real hassle every single morning, essentially. i’d say 3 to 4 times out of 5, this malfunction happens.

UPDATE: after posting this topic (now closed by the moderator) previously, i was asked to DISABLE hard acceleration. Well, that reduced the frequency of the “disappearing Brave browsers at boot up” but it still happens say, every 3 boot ups or so. There is no telling when it will happen. As I only turn off my PC once per day (at the end of the night), and turn it on once a day (early morning), it is very annoying to have lost all the tabs of what one was working on the previous evening.

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): 1. 2. 3.
the only way to reproduce this is to reboot the pc many times and do a tally on how often it happens. but for me, thus far, it’s roughly 3-4 times out of every 5 reboots. UPDATE: with the fine advice from the moderator of this thread/forum, i was able to disable Hardware Acceleration and now it is less frequent but still very frequent. in fact, initially after disabling Hardware Acceleration, it didn’t happen for days, then now, it crept back and it is happening rather consistently, say, 2 or 3 out of every 5 or 6 bootups, approximately.

Actual Result (gifs and screenshots are welcome!):
can’t do a screenshot as the brave browsers would struggle to open for merely 0.3 seconds (approximately), then completely disappear.

Expected result:
i would naturally expect at each reboot, that all my brave windows would reopen at the same sizes and locations.

Reproduces how often:
3-4 times out of every 5 reboots.

Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu):
Version 0.61.51 Chromium: 73.0.3683.75 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Reproducible on current live release (yes/no):
Yes

@Dualmonitors,
I’m assuming you’re using multiple monitors?
If so, are you using “Display Fusion” or any other software in order to manage your multiple displays?

I’m using two monitors. I’m not using Display Fusion or any other software besides the standard video card software that is more or less required (Radeon).

Btw, sadly, this problem is now happening daily - every single morning in recent days when i boot up my pc for the day, the Brave browsers merely flash for a very short moment and disappear. Sigh. This is very annoying.

Any assistance by @Mattches et al would be most appreciated.

I’ve only started using Brave a few months ago and I’ve made it my main browser ever since. It feels completely like Chrome browser but with additional benefits. Let’s hope this problem has a solution so I may continue to enjoy using Brave.

Thank you all in advance.

@Dualmonitors,
I’m curious as to whether any of this happens when you’re using a single monitor or only when you have multiple displays running?

@Dualmonitors, your Brave appears to be out of date. I usually use Nightly on Windows, but just downloaded Release and from brave://version:
Brave 0.62.51 Chromium: 73.0.3683.103 (Official Build) (64-bit)
OS Windows 10 OS Build 17763.437

Maybe download again and reinstall from https://brave.com/download/ would fix?

@Mattches:

i always have 2 monitors running because it is a rather set up and thought out configuration, good for my work and my seating, etc. i don’t move things around much as the desk, etc, are all designed to be fixed.

so, to answer your question, i’ve never ever used this particular pc (nor the last several pc’s that i’ve owned) on one monitor unless one monitor were to break down and i have to order a replacement monitor.

@hnktong:

i am actually on Brave 0.62.51 currently and have been probably ever since this version came out. the reason for the out of date info is that this is a re-born thread as my previous thread with the same issue has been closed and the moderator asked me to start a NEW thread and copy and paste from the old thread. i took it upon myself to add an “Update” paragraph in order to have the current issue (most up to date issue/problem) but had neglected to update the Brave version number.

Thank you for thinking of this but this has been updated.

@Mattches and @hnktong:

May I ask if you guys think it might help if i uninstalled Brave and re-install? how much work would it be to have the bookmarks transfer over, etc? I don’t want to go through this hassle if it is unlikely going to help!

thank you to both of you for trying to help me. i look forward to your other suggestions/ideas.

Update:

sadly, this “not remembering my Brave windows” at boot up each morning is now occurring every single time i reboot. previously, it was every few days.

hope someone has an idea of what’s wrong or someone might be so kind as to alert the good folks at Brave’s software bug department to find a solution.

Thank you in advance.

@Dualmonitors,
Apologies for the late reply.
Give me some time to dig into this and reach out to a few team members about the issue. Really appreciate your patience.

@Mattches: Hello. I look forward to hearing about any solutions. Thank you.

The situation is happening very often, maybe every other day. I would almost say it happens more often than it doesn’t happen. very annoying.

thank you @Mattches in advance. hope you and your team/colleagues will find a solution. i just have a regular Windows 10 64-bit pc. somewhat higher end model, not the highest end, so why would this be such a big problem, i wonder?

@Dualmonitors,
Thank you for bumping this again – sorry for the delay.
The reason I asked about Display Fusion specifically is because we’ve had/have compatibility issues with the software before:

Can you tell me if you see the same behavior on Chrome or any other chromium-based browser? Or is this specific to Brave? If so, I’ll reach out to Display Fusion and see if I can establish a dialogue with their support team and work the issue out or at least get an update on it. Really appreciate your patience.

@Mattches: thanks for your reply.

I do not use Display Fusion.

I don’t have this “disappearing browsers” with Chrome and i do not use any other Chromium-based browser - so the answer is: this is specific to Brave.

i enjoy using Brave and do not wish to go back to Chrome, but this is really very frustrating virtually every single morning having to re-open several browsers, place them properly on my large monitors, and trying to remember which tabs were open from the night before - quite a few!

thank you in advance for trying to help. i look forward to a solution. thanks!

@Dualmonitors,
Apologies – I had this mixed up with a separate issue entirely, thats my bad. Here are a few things to try:

  1. In an earlier comment, I asked whether or not this behavior happens when only one monitor is active, to which you responded:

so, to answer your question, i’ve never ever used this particular pc (nor the last several pc’s that i’ve owned) on one monitor unless one monitor were to break down and i have to order a replacement monitor.

:point_up: Would you mind trying to reproduce the issue with only one active display? Unhook (physically) or otherwise disable any additional monitors and try to shutdown, reboot and launch Brave to see if the behavior is the same with one monitor vs multiple. Let me know the results.

  1. You may also want to try downloading a different install channel and see if you get the same behavior there as well. Try downloading our Beta or Developer builds and try to reproduce the issue using one of those. Note that installing either (or both) of these will not interfere with your current Brave release installation – each can be installed/run/uninstalled/modified in parallel without effecting the others.
