I currently use the vertical tab bar with the option to expand vertical tabs panel on mouseover when collapsed.
I would love to make it behave like the sidebar does.
Sidebar has the option to make it completely hidden and to be shown only on mouseover.
Any chance a similar option to be added for the vertical tab bar?

That’s a great idea! It would be really useful to have an option for vertical tabs to be completely hidden and only show on mouseover, similar to the sidebar. It might be worth suggesting this feature to the developers or checking if there’s a plugin or extension that offers this functionality.

I decided to do what you suggested and ask for the feature in Github.
But no need to do a new post for it, they are working on something like that, to add the option to hide the tab strip. 
It was posted 2 days ago.
