Night Mode somewhat broken (loads white temporary background instead of black)

Troubleshooting technical issues is much easier when both the user and support agent practice clear communication. For this reason, we have provided the template below for you to fill out with information about your issue. Please provide as much detail as possible so we can most efficiently resolve your problem.

Description of the issue: It seems night mode is somewhat broken in this version. Solid blank loading pages that should be black are showing as white now (they used to be black). This also includes the “tab blanking out” issue, where they are now white instead of black, or opening a link that opens a new tab where it will be temporarily solid white before the page loads a split second, etc. This is extremely blinding in the dark to have an all white box constantly come up like this instead of the expected black.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Tap a link that opens a new tab or allow tab-sleep/blanking issue to show up.
  2. See bright white background instead of black before things load.
  3. Once loaded things are fine.

Expected result: Return night mode back to normal.

Brave Version( check About Brave): 1.77.95

Mobile Device details Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra on Android 14.

Additional Information: Other issue I’m referring to about the tabs: Brave tabs has become increasingly laggy with each update, and tabs sometimes show a blank page

Here’s a video that I was able to make of the tab sleeping/white background issue combined.

Looking at another thread, I changed brave://flags/#enable-force-dark from “Enabled” to “Enabled with selective image inversion” and after the restart of the browser, that seemed to fix the issue (back to being black and not white background when loading). It also worked with a couple of the other settings that were not just plain “Enabled”. I’ll keep testing, as this was just a quick test with opening links in new tabs, not the “tab hanging” issue. I’ll report back later.

So this what I said above seems to have fixed the white background/loading screen issue with Night Mode. Basically, just go to brave://flags/#enable-force-dark and change it from “Enabled” to one of the other options. I am using “Enabled with selective inversion of non-image elements” currently. I’ll mark this as the solution.

Brave 1.77.97, Chromium 135.0.7049.84, running on Samsung s21 Ultra and wife’s Samsung s21.

I originally responded to your “blank tab” issue thread, which you replied and referenced this thread … I have also changed from

“Enabled” to

“Enabled with selective inversion of non-image elements”

and can confirm this workaround fixes the bright white issue for me - thanks!!

Came here to make a thread about this. Glad to see you’ve beat me to it.

I’ll look into setting that flag, but you shouldn’t mark this as solved as it’s clearly a bug that hasn’t been solved.

Hmm. This isn’t a bug-submission website. It’s mostly a user-to-user site, though some folks will submit a bug report because of posts here.

Marking a Solution out here means “here’s what seems to be a workaround” , or a “this is the solution” because a newbie doesn’t know about a hidden setting or low level setting (via “chrome://*”) , etc etc

The OP of this thread marked as Solution, because it’s what worked for them. (hey, and me, for now).

But yea, the true solution will be a bug fix. But workarounds work

This. I marked my own post as the solution because it fixes the issue so people can find it easier in the future. I’m not a developer writing code, heh. But yeah, let me know if this fixes it for you as well, @caldercay

Although the workaround reduces the occurrences …

I still see the blinding white background on occasion. Horribly annoying, and a Brave only issue, for us.
