Since the last couple of releases (updates), the browser has become increasingly laggy. When I have two or more tabs open, it sometimes takes 2-3 seconds to switch between tabs, and the new tab doesn’t always display the page; instead, it often shows a completely blank page, requiring me to refresh to see the content again. I have done nothing to my tablet, and Brave is the only app that isn’t functioning properly.
How can this issue be reproduced?
Have two or more tabs open.
Expected result:
That the browser performed like it used to, without being sluggish.
Mobile Device details
I am using the latest updated version of Brave (Brave 1.76.73, Chromium 134.0.6998.45) and Android 12. My tablet Lenovo Tab P11 Plus has a MediaTek Helio G90T (8-core 2.05 GHz) CPU, an ARM Mali-G76 MC4 GPU, and 6 GB of RAM.
Additional Information:
I have tried deleting the app cache, disabling AdBlock, deleting and reinstalling the app, clearing the Android 12 cache, restarting the tablet, etc., but none of these actions have fixed the problem I am experiencing with Brave.
I am experiencing the exact same issue. I am a intensive user and have about 50+ tabs open sometimes, but either way shouldn’t matter. I already checked if RAM is somehow causing a problem but I have about 1 Gb of ram available so that shouldn’t be a problem.
I have the same brave version and a pixel 7a android 15 march if that helps.
I now have to do it so often, I think this morning alone 40 times maybe. It happens sometimes from switching tabs, to getting back from external auto fill application as well as just entering brave from the home launcher.
I would really like a fix.
Temporary fixes are reselecting the tab you want or reloading brave sometimes helps.
If a full reload is required it never seems to happen, but more so in a soft/no reload tab.
This latest version (1.76.73) has been super egregious. I have an S24 Ultra with 12GB of RAM on Android 14, and I have maybe at MOST 8-10 tabs open, and it has been ridiculous with the black/reloading tabs when switching between apps or just tabs. I have done the tricks in the OS for keeping things in memory, but it has only gotten progressively worse. It used to just reload, but not the black tab of showing nothing is ridiculous this latest version.
Edit: The crazy thing is, it will SHOW black, but if you tap around, the page is clearly “there”, because when it DOES finally load again multiple seconds later, it will be at a different part like if you tapped a link within it. Is this Brave trying to save RAM usage by “blanking” out the display of the page, putting it to sleep so to speak? Clearly not working very well…
Still present in 1.76.81, but according to that Chromium thread, they are getting to identify the root cause.
According to this post: “FrameEvictionManager can save up to 5 Surfaces , which is across all Renderers. So to trigger eviction you might need 6 tabs. It should try to evict the oldest first.”
I was not having any problems until I opened a sixth tab, and boom, immediately had the issue with an older tab. So, it seems like they are getting there and are testing with Chromium 136 (Brave is on 134).
Looks like they closed that original Chromium thread saying it was considered a duplicate of this one now: https://issues.chromium.org/issues/381224161. But it sounds like they may have fixed it in the latest nightlies of 136, so who knows how long it will take to get downstream.
Still happening with v1.77.95, but the changes have not been merged. Just keeping this thread updated for anyone searching.
Edit, since I can’t reply more than 3x in a row: Latest update on that a Chromium thread, and a few people are confirming that v135.0.7049.84 fixes the issue. I am assuming we now just have to wait for Brave to merge those changes and we’ll be good to go. @steeven
Edit #2: I just updated to Brave v1.77.97 on the Play Store, which from another thread points out is based on Chromium v135.0.7049.84 – so this SHOULD be fixed. I’ll test a while and confirm, and if others can as well and report back, I’d appreciate it.
Edit #3: Since applying the latest update with the Chromium fix, I have not had the issue at all. I believe we are good to go. You just need to download v1.77.97. Call this resolved.
