Hey all, beginning last night, my browser just started locking up and is very slow to respond. I’ve been slowly disabling extensions, but other than an update, nothing has changed. Once I click on a brave window, I am not able to click on anything else unless I “alt” + “tab” and select a non-brave app. However, the instant I click on a brave browser window again and it locks back up.
Description of the issue: How can this issue be reproduced?
Open Brave & Wait for it to load pages
Click on any window
You can click on a tab & brave locks up
Wait for 4-5 minutes and you can click a link then it locks up again
Expected result:
Being able to utilize the app without the computer locking up.
Brave Version( check About Brave):
Brave Version 1.68.137 Chromium: 127.0.6533.100 (Official Build) (64-Bit)
So I have attempted to Re-Install and it is still locking up randomly.
I have also tried to “time” it, but there is no frequency that can be identified in when it happens.
I even disabled the hardware acceleration, and it still happens.
I’ve even got the brave task manager up and tried to identify what pages might or might not be causing it.
What is interesting is that this just started a couple of days ago on one machine, but I have (2) other machines running the same version with identical tabs (and they are laptops while this is a big boy desktop) and they do not have this problem.
Today I have disabled all extensions one by one to see if there was a “gotcha” hiding in one of them, but even blank with no extensions it’s causing the same issues.
Alright, so I just updated one of my laptops to the most recent version (Version 1.68.141 Chromium: 127.0.6533.120 (Official Build) (64-bit)) and it started having the same exact issues.
I am about to go look and see if I can downgrade to a previous version and see if that resolves the issue.
Okay, I’ve rolled back a few versions and they were still giving me issues; however, I went to a laptop that has no issues and it is running Version 1.66.115 Chromium: 125.0.6422.112 (Official Build) (64-bit) and I’m having zero problems.
So something has happened in an update that is causing brave to behave erratically.
I am running this version without issues and no lagging or locking up.
@jbmacer, sorry for the delay in responding. I’ve been reading through your post, and it seems you’ve done some basic troubleshooting but may have missed a few steps.
You mentioned checking the Brave Task Manager, but what were the results? You didn’t share a screenshot or mention if you noticed anything unusual. For example, when you check the Brave Task Manager or your device’s task manager, are you seeing elevated CPU usage or anything else that stands out?
Also, you mentioned multiple machines. What operating systems are on each? I see you labeled the topic under Windows, but which version of Windows are you using?
Some things to check:
Try the following steps one at a time, and if the issue persists, revert to the original settings before moving on to the next:
Open in a private window.
Create a new profile.
Try using the Beta or Nightly versions (it sounds like you’re considering this based on your last post).
If the issue persists across all of the above, try using Chrome for a while to see if it has the same problem.
@jbmacer, that’s possible, but it could also be due to changes made in brave://flags or something specific to your profiles. While I know you mentioned different devices, I’m not sure if you’re syncing them or adjusting settings between them.
Regardless, it will be interesting to see how things handle for you on Nightly as you are trying it.
@Saoiray I’m going to go and compare the flags between the two, but I’ve not made changes to those flags. Nightly works okay, but I’m going to go back to the standard version.
Also, my browsers are synced between devices, so they should be identical between them.
Let’s hope the next update fixes whatever issues there are.
The task manager did not really show much of anything. When brave locked up, it locked up and doesn’t really show anything that is suspect to cause the issue. I am going to watch it again now that i’ve gone back to an older version.
Private windows also lock up.
nightly version was just mentioned as having worked but i’ve gone back to the standard version and it is all over the place.
I should also mention that Chrome itself is updated and is not locking up at all.
my system has 128gb ram and a ryzen 9 16core processor. I’ve had as many as 500 tabs open in brave before and never had issues with it.
Edit: It just happened again, and it looks like the “Browser” jumps way high, but nothing else is jumping way up to 100(+) CPU and after 15-30 seconds it starts responding again and falls back to sub 10.0 CPU
@jbmacer as you mentioned, it doesn’t seem like there’s anything in Brave that’s using CPU. The overall memory footprint and all is pretty average/low as well.
I am still waiting to hear back about you trying on a new browser profile. That’s where you go to the hamburger menu, which looks like and then choose More Tools → Add new profile.
Okay, but are they default? If not, you may want to put the one having issue into default for flags and test. It may be that there’s a compatibility issue on a particular setting. Just ideally trying to get a good understanding of things and rule out as much as can.
Other things to consider would be if you have anything like an internet security, antivirus, or firewall that could be to play.
Oh, and to confirm, you have this enabled now, right? It generally should always be on as it helps divide tasks between GPU and CPU. Otherwise you’re putting 100% of the load on CPU and can have worse performance.
I just was trying to cover as much as we can via basic troubleshooting and info gathering. I’m tagging in @Mattches and hoping he can read through everything. Not sure if he will have any answers but at least will be able to relay things to dev team.
hey @mattches, I just loaded up Version 1.71.16 Chromium: 128.0.6613.40 (Official Build) nightly (64-bit) and it seems to be going good without locking up.
Again, I’m also responding here on Chrome Version 127.0.6533.120 (Official Build) (64-bit)
So, I just took the nightly and started syncing everything over and it slowed down again. Now it’s making me thing it is going to be an extension combability issue.
I have not added any new extensions so why this started all of the sudden, I have no idea, but I’m going to start going through and deleting / removing those extensions.
