Lost all saved password after the new update to 1.38.109

Description of the issue:

I lost all the saved passwords after my brave browser automatically update to the latest version last night. Version number 1.38.109. This is quite a disaster. I saved all my work and personal usernames and passwords in Brave but it all gone now. Could you please fix it asap.


How can this issue be reproduced?

It may not only happen to me. All the websites I usually go to automatically logged out. When I go to “setting” and “password”, all the saved passwords are gone.

Expected result:
have my passwords back.

Actual result:
all the passwords are gone

Did you make a backup of your bookmarks?

If yes, open bookmarks manager and import the saved bookmarks.

Hi there, thanks. I don’t have a backup for bookmarks but that’s not a problem. I still have all the bookmarks. What is gone is all the saved passwords.


I am afraid, unless you have made a csv file of your passwords or sync with another device it might not possible to recover them.
Are you using Windows 10?

As a precaution . . .

In a Brave Browser > New Window, go to: brave://settings/getStarted

Select: Open a specific page or set of pages

Select: Add a new page

Enter: about:blank (notice the colon)

Close the Brave Browser Settings window.

In a Brave Browser > New Window, go to: brave://settings/cookies

Disable: Clear cookies and site data when you close all windows

Go to: brave://settings/clearBrowserData

For tab Advanced

  • Disable: Passwords and other sign-in data
  • Disable: Site and Shields Settings

Click on the “Clear data” button.

(The “Clear data” button saves the selections.)

Return to: brave://settings/clearBrowserData

For tab On Exit

  • Disable: Passwords and other sign-in data
  • Disable: Site and Shields Settings

Click on the “Save” button.

Close all Brave Browser windows and Exit/Quit Brave Browser


Manually back up your Bookmarks - use Bookmarks Manager to export.

And, back up your BraveSoftware folder:

Windows OS:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Default\

Mac OS:

$HOME/Library/"Application Support"/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/Default/

Linux OS:


And for Windows OS, regularly/daily create a System System Restore Point.

Is it a bug that affects Windows 10 users after 1.38 update??

I am having the same issue. Is there a way to get the passwords back? I do not really want to reset passwords for 100s of sites.

I haven’t had any solution yet

I am facing the same issue second time. Last time it got solved after a reboot but now, nothing seems to work. And I have been trying to solve this for days. It’s the same for chrome, edge, brave and others however Firefox doesn’t seem to have this issue. Can someone please help.
