Logged Out of All Accounts & Lost Passwords After Accidentally Closing Brave via Task Manager

Hello everyone,

I was using Brave Browser and accidentally closed it through the Task Manager. When I reopened it, I noticed that I had been logged out of all my accounts, and my saved passwords were gone. However, my browsing history and autofill information seemed to be completely intact.

I did manage to find my login data file, which appears to contain my passwords, but it’s encrypted, so I can’t view them. The strange part is that these files are still in the following directory on my PC:

C:\Users\abuma\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Default

But for some reason, Brave doesn’t seem to be reading or decrypting them, and I can’t access my passwords through the password manager. At least, that’s what it seems like I’m not entirely sure, but it looks that way.

I’ve saved a copy of both the login data and login data for account files just in case. However, I don’t really know how to decrypt my passwords, and I’m hesitant to use any password recovery tools because of security concerns. Also, I’m a bit of a rookie with this kind of thing, so I’m not really sure where to start.

Another thing I noticed is that I never turned on the option to delete my data when I close Brave, so I’m not sure why this is happening.

I’m using Brave version: 1.75.175 Chromium: 133.0.6943.54 (Official Build) (64-bit).

Has anyone else experienced this issue? I’m wondering if there’s a way to recover my lost passwords or if this is a known glitch when the browser is forcefully closed like this.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • Checking the password manager in Brave settings (no saved passwords appear).
  • Restarting the browser to see if the problem resolves.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
