Laptop & Phone are on sync chain, but no tabs are shared (resubmit)

Note: This is a reproduction of an automatically closed issue I originally posted on May 16. This problem persists across updates of Brave on both my phone and laptop. How do I fix/workaround this problem?

Description of the issue:

I have a sync chain with my laptop (Linux) and phone (Android). The laptop says my phone hasn’t been active for several days. (That’s clearly wrong.) Tabs on my phone can’t be opened on my laptop.

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): 1. 2. 3.

I don’t know how to reproduce this. It’s just a state the two systems seem to be in. “Automatically sync app data” is enabled on my phone.

Actual Result (gifs and screenshots are welcome!):

Phone shows:

Laptop shows:

Screenshot_2021-07-07_09-34-10

Somehow, it appears my laptop has lost its notion of the status of my phone.

Expected result:

I would have expected my laptop to show my phone to have been active within the last few minutes and for at least a few of its tabs (currently 21) to be available from the History>Other Devices menu.

Reproduces how often:

All the time (or at least as often as I want to view a tab from another device).

Operating System and Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu):

Laptop: XUbuntu 20.04, 1.26.74 Chromium: 91.0.4472.124 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Phone: Android 11, 1.26.74 Chromium: 91.0.4472.124 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Additional Information:

Restarting my phone doesn’t change the “last active” date of my phone from my laptop’s perspective. I tried removing my phone from the sync chain. It failed on my laptop. On my phone, it appears to remove itself, but when I scan the QR code offered by my laptop (Add New Device), my phone thinks it’s the only device on the sync chain.

Hey @smontanaro !

Can you try removing all Synced devices and starting a new Sync Chain, and using the pass phrase to connect them instead?

Thanks for the response, @GreenBananaPorridge. I’ve tried a couple times, without success. I displayed the sync code text on my laptop, copied it, then pasted it on my phone. On my laptop I see only the laptop on the chain. On my phone I see only the phone. Neither shows the other device.

Hey @smontanaro !

Can you please send a screenshot of your brave://sync-internals page on both your devices?

Thank you,

Porridge

Done and done. I was wondering if there were some internal settings available.

Be back with you shortly while we look into the issue.

@smontanaro can you try selecting the “Disable Sync” button on the internals page on your laptop? And then re-establishing the sync chain to see if that works?

@jsecretan Well, that certainly changes things. Now every time I try to connect the two devices, Brave on my laptop crashes. Even with unlimited core file size, I couldn’t find a core file, however. I’ve uploaded the last log lines from ~/.xsession-errors in case that yields clues.
brave.txt (4.6 KB)

Okay, success! I changed the steps ever-so-slightly. On my laptop I had it display the sync code, copied it, then immediately dismissed that dialog. Over on my phone I pasted the sync code into the form and attached. I am once again syncing (well, at least according to the displays on both devices).

The one difference I made after the crash occurred was to close the dialog on my laptop before pasting the sync code into my phone.

Yikes, sorry to hear about the crash, I’ll take this back to the team and track it down. But glad to hear you are going in the mean time. Let us know if you encounter any other issues, thanks!

Oh let me ask you @smontanaro, we are trying to figure out how some clients like the one on your laptop get into that state. How old is the profile on that machine? Were you a user of the previous version of Brave sync? We saw some related migration problems there in the past.

Good question @jsecretan , I don’t think so, but I don’t really know. I haven’t been using Brave all that long. Looking at the oldest timestamps in ~/.config/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser, it appears I began using it around 3 Jan 2021. Might there be some breadcrumbs in that directory tree as leftover evidence of previous Brave Sync v1 usage?

Ok thanks for the feedback, Sync v1 would have been pretty well gone by then.

Oh one more thing, could you share any IDs from brave://crashes in case you have any? So we can track down that crash?

Sorry, it appears crash reporting is disabled. I will enable it and see if I can provoke the crash.

Well darn. It didn’t crash. Maybe after eventually getting sync set back up and running, whatever was causing the crash was no longer provoked. Sorry…
