How do I get my old "Brave Colors" back?

Description of the issue:

When I first started using Brave years ago, I set up several profiles for various purposes. After picking my “Theme” and “Avatar”, Brave chose a nice bright color for the title bar and tabs.

(...see screenshot...)

#1, #2, #3, #4, & #5 are all different profiles, displayed in the nice, bright colors that I’m used to. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

#6 is a profile that used to have a bright pink background for the title bar and tabs. I was trying to troubleshoot some dark mode issues and I noticed the Theme was set to “Brave Colors”, with a button on the right labeled, [Reset to default]. I thought perhaps that was causing the issue, so I clicked that button.

Now… No matter what color theme I use, I can’t get the light pink background to come back, for my wife’s profile! :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

For #5, I left the [Appearance] tab open, so you can see what #6 looked like, before I clicked on the [Reset to default] button.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Locate a profile that has a bright colored title/tab background, like the examples I have shown here.

  2. Use the following search result to find out, Where does the brave browser store its profiles? on your specific brand of computer.

  3. Copy that profile’s folder to a backup location, so you can restore any settings that are changed.

  4. Click on the [Reset to default] button.

Expected result:

I expected it to reset to the colors that were set when I created that profile.

Brave Version( check About Brave):

Version 1.77.100 Chromium: 135.0.7049.100 (Official Build) (64-bit)

I did something similar recently and now the best I can get for my pink profile is a dull purple. Clearly the set of preinstalled themes changed, and I can’t see a way to get an old one back, but there’s lots to choose from on the Chrome Web Store.

Brave is open source… Perhaps I need to scour the source code and history, to find out what changed…

It would be nice if someone from the dev team would pipe up with some information about what changed…

It could be the default themes or perhaps, the way they are applied now…

I can tell you this isn’t really a Brave issue but a Chrome/Chromium one. In newer versions, changed the UI for being able to select colors, but let you keep your old colors if you’d set them previously. Once you change them, you can’t directly set them back.

I’m not sure if you can find the exact setting to fix it back, but I do know you can find a theme on the Store that is close, download it, and modify the parameters.

You can kinda read how here: use the CRX extension they mention to download the them, rename the file to end in .zip, and then you can edit the manifest.json file to mess with colors. Delete teh _manifest folder and rename it back to a CRX file, then drag and drop it onto the Addons window to install your altered theme.

No. This is definitely a Brave thing.
