Is Brave’s default theme gone? I liked how dark it was. I’m on a Mac.
I just updated to version: Version 1.76.47 Chromium: 133.0.6943.27 (Official Build) beta (arm64)

We have not removed or changed any themes. You can adjust the theme/colors of Brave in Settings --> Get Started
and in Settings --> Appearance
.
Something definitely has changed. I no longer see the usual colors for Brave’s dark theme. That’s definitely a lighter grey. In Settings > Appearance, I could’ve sworn there was a restore to default button in the same row as “Theme – open web store”. If not, then selecting the first theme circle like I have selected used the darker Brave theme. But not anymore. It looks like it’s using the default dark Chrome theme.
In general, Brave’s branding/themes do change — although the theme hasn’t been changed recently as far as I know. You can see the latest changes on our release page here:
If you want the theme to be darker at this time, as stated before, I would recommend installing a custom “dark theme” that meets your requirements.
It has indeed changed with the latest version of the beta. That’s a damn shame. Brave’s theme is great. I hope this doesn’t make it to the main release. I’ve checked the release notes and nothing is mentioned in there about this change.
Beta – You can see it’s Chrome’s default dark theme (much lighter than Brave’s default theme)
Production Version – You can see it’s much darker
I don’t want to install a darker version from the store because they’re usually not that great and I still use light mode too which the themes that come with the browser supports.
@marlonr not sure what to tell you. I mean, on Release 1.74.51 my Windows looks like the below when in “Dark.” You see there’s no darkness at all on top.
Btw, changing it to Dark rather than Same as macOS doesn’t make a difference does it? Assuming it’s the same but with how random things can be at times, figured would ask.
Yeah changing it to dark just uses the same theme when in dark mode.
Looks like your production version is using a custom theme (yellow one). Curious how it looks in the default dark theme.
Your beta and nightly are the same as my beta (Chrome’s default dark theme)
I was going to come and say no, because I never installed anything. But indeed hitting the option to go back to default changed it up. But now I don’t know how to change it back if I wanted, as it’s not showing as an option anywhere and themes just takes me to the web store.
Looking at the name, it was saying my theme was Brave Colors. I’m going to have to figure that out later. Perhaps persisted from long ago? Anyway…
Did it larger so can see version info, but otherwise:
Guess let me have a fun side by side here of Release and Beta
Actually, side by side in my last reply is a bit lame. Decided to line them up to each other, which probably is better. Don’t ask why, but I decided to do Beta in the middle, with the ones on top and bottom both being Release
Guess you can see a difference but not sure how substantial I’d say it is.
@marlonr as just was looking around at a bunch of things, I saw this theme in the chrome web store. It was talking about “old Brave dark theme” and was put up last year. But even in the pictures I’m seeing there, it seems lighter.
Yeah…see, the release ones still have the Brave theme which is way better!
This looks close to your old theme: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/banana/cdkecinaonohgbmhojlaeeoalomfhlal
