HDR works in chrome on youtube but Not in brave. I've not been able to solve this in 3 years please help

Description of the issue: I can’t get videos to play in HDR in Brave browser
How can this issue be reproduced? Anytime I try

  1. Open brave
  2. Go to Youtube
  3. Play an HDR video

Expected result: HDR playback

Brave Version: 1.70.119

@AAcmotorman,
Can you please provide additional details? For example, what actually happens when you try to view the video? Does it play at all? Just a black screen? Does it play but is super laggy?

Additionally, does it work in other browsers? What specific Windows OS are you using?

@Mattches Yeah it works in chrome like always. Youtbe on brave only plays back in 4k

@Mattches Sorry, I didn’t see that you asked the OS. I’m on a new install of windows 11 right now. I’ve never seen brave actually play a youtube video in HDR on any OS over several computers, laptops, and fresh installs over the last 3 years.

It plays just fine at 4k in Brave but never HDR

Weird You Turn on You HDR setting on Windows or your monitor.
As it is working for me right now?

@PrivateGamer Yeah, it’s on HDR which is why the chrome plays in HDR. Otherwise, it wouldn’t play HDR on Chrome either.

For the record my hardware is a 7900xtx and a samsung S90D 65" oled tv.

@AAcmotorman,
Not sure what’s going on here — a quick test on my end is showing [video quality] HDR next to the resolution in the YT video settings as expected:

I noticed that moving the window to different monitors (as I’m using two additional rn) would change the options listed, so the screen detected does determine whether or not the video will display in HDR. But if you’re using the same screen to test both Chrome and Brave and HDR is only not working in Brave then I’m not sure what the issue here is.

Can you please try opening an Guest profile (Menu --> More tools --> Guest profile), close your original profile window and test to see if YT will display HDR content when using the guest profile?

@Mattches oh wow yes it does work as a guest profile. now I need to sleuth out what setting I’ve screwed up to make my profile not work. Thank you, I think I can take it from here.

So great to be able to use brave for everything now, you’re the real deal sir

If you don’t mind, please update me here when you find the solution as I’d be interested to log this for future reference. Additionally, I’d probably start with any installed extensions you have to see if one of this is the source of the issue.
