Difficulty in making Brave Default and (windows) un-installing (for re-install)

Installed Brave a few weeks ago.

A few teething things - like the desktop icon disappearing, and the application not appearing in windows apps.

In short I’ve tried re-installing - this temporarily works okay - The profile is preserved. The app appears in windows “Programs and Features” list, bit after a while is dissapears. Feels like the install is incomplete somehow, and/or the updater/something runs post install and breaks the installation.

How can this issue be reproduced?

1.Install Brave
2. check it appears in “Programs and Features”
3. invoke it - works fine
4. exit & invoke again / wait
5. It slightly breaks the installation
5a. The desktop icon will disappear, (though the installation is still there and can be invoked using the ‘exe’ in “C:\Program Files (x86)\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\Application”
5b. There will be no app for web browser in windows’ “Default Apps”, if you set Brave to be the default.
5c. No Brave app entry under the windows “Start” menu

Expected result:
Brave should be an installed app and can be the default for Windows Web Browser

Brave Version( check About Brave):
Version 1.2.42 Chromium: 79.0.3945.117 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Additional Information:
An error occurred while checking for updates: Update check failed to start (error code 4: 0x80070002 – system level).

@Jaff,
Thanks for reaching out to us. This seems like a very strange issue. Would you mind downloading our Beta build and testing to see if you get the same results? Note that doing this will not overwrite or interfere with any Brave data you currently have on your machine.

exactly same problem with the Beta.

(with new Brave [beta] profile it would appear, and running with no extensions, imported bookmarks or anything).

@Jaff,

Can you clarify what exactly you’re saying here? Just that the Beta does, in fact, launch and run as intended?

Also, can you tell me if you have any Anti-virus software running on your system or if you have any “cleaning”/desktop maintenance apps? Like cCleaner for example?
