Can't access comments on MSN news articles. Buttons to get to comments section don't show

On MSN news articles, there should be a small menu of buttons with a “like”, “dislike” and “comments” buttons on it. This is currently to the left of the article text, but it doesn’t show at all. I can access comments (by clicking on the notification) when somebody replies to a comment of mine, and the notification pops up.

How do I turn this function on?

I’m using Brave 1.52.129 Chromium 114.0.5735.198

Thanks

Link to specific article with comments? https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/un-chief-says-haiti-urgently-needs-international-security-force-and-humanitarian-aid/ar-AA1djusk

Doesn’t show comments for me, couldn’t see any articles with comments.

I’m not sure what you’re asking, but that is a typical MSN article, and there are no buttons for comments/like/dislike on the left, and they’re all like that.

I also have Edge on my PC, and I don’t see them when I use it. I do see them on my computer at work, which is an ordinary PC with some version of Windows or another.

@JJohnston please check your Shields settings. Have you set fingerprinting to strict or something? If so, it can prevent it from showing. If you make some adjustments, I’m sure you’ll see what (if anything) on Shields is impacting it.

Shields are up, and fingerprinting is blocked; nothing changes when I unblock fingerprinting or lower the shields.

@JJohnston Ok, so I’m going to ask you a few things.

  1. As Fanboynz asked you earlier, can you provide a link to one of the articles where you say that the buttons aren’t showing? This is being asked so we can look at it and see if we can replicate the issue. If we can, it makes it easier to provide solutions.

  2. Can you open in a Private Window and advise if it happens there as well?

  3. If private window doesn’t resolve, can you try a Guest Window or Create a new profile within your browser and test there? (This and the above are to try to rule out settings and extensions)

Here are a couple of links to msn news articles. I don’t know if they really do have comment buttons or not, because I can’t see them, but I’m pretty sure they do - I think they all do, and if msn decides not to allow comments on a particular story, the comment button will have a slash through it.

This might be of interest: just to the right of this comment box, as I paste these links, I get two error messages saying, “Sorry, we were unable to generate a preview for this web page, because the following oEmbed / OpenGraph tags could not be found: description, image”

Private window and guest window make no difference.

@fanboynz I’ll be curious to see if you can replicate. I just tested on links and ended up with https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/former-white-house-press-secretary-stephanie-grisham-says-she-saw-trump-show-classified-documents-to-people-on-the-mar-a-lago-dining-patio/ar-AA1dnH57?ocid=hpmsn&cvid=9a62c1b5f3b44b93813375adf8d573ee&ei=53 and I’m able to see what they are referencing.

Chrome:

Edge

Brave Release (with Shields off)

Brave Nightly (Shields off, which works for some reason)

Brave Release (Shields off, but also all content filtering removed)

NOTE

I still don’t know why it didn’t work earlier but seems to be working now. What I have discovered is that Fanboy's Annoyances is blocking it. If I visit with Shields on but without Fanboy's Annoyances applied, it will show:

@fanboynz guess bigger question is would there be anything that would apply the filters even with Shields off? If so, might be what’s going on there. But completely disabling and then renewing gets it all going.

And just keeping Fanboy's Annoyances disabled seems to fix the issue there for now, if a person wants to see that.

@JJohnston can you confirm as to whether you have Fanboy's Annoyances checked off under brave://settings/shields/filters?

Give it 24hrs for the update to roll out

I had none of the filters on that list checked, including Fanboy’s annoyances. Checking it makes no difference.

But why would this also be happening in Edge?

I don’t understand any of this, but if this was the fix, it worked. I can now see the like/dislike/comments menu I couldn’t before. Oddly, it works with both Brave and Edge now. Thanks!
