Browser crashing after being opened after 10-30 seconds every time it is launched

Any news from the team on this? Such an issue is hard on the trust users put in the browser. Especially when it’s already difficult to get a team to move to Brave, and days go by.

Can you give some sort of visibility so this issue can be managed as an IT team manager?

Thanks

This has been ongoing for a week now. The lack of any information or updates from the developers is rather concerning.

Crash report captured on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 12:00:44 PM, uploaded on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at 9:29:02 AM

Crashes are now happening on all my machines with the following version:
Version 0.68.140 Chromium: 77.0.3865.90 (Official Build) (64-bit)

i did not have sync active, as it never worked as intended and i always ended up in duplicate bookmarks.

I activated now crash reports sending for all my computers and you will receive around 90 crash reports.

The issue happens 90% of cases on youtube and google search.

The most frequent way to reproduce it is when i am doing the following:

  1. open 2 browser tabs in separate windows.
  2. both are on youtube (one is at the home screen where you see recommendations) the otherone plays a video.
  3. click on the youtube tab that shows the recommendations multiple times on the youtube logo (creates a page refresh and loads the latest recommendations).
  4. doing this procedure over and over again my browser (brave) crashes (NO SYNC ACTIVE)

sometimes it takes 5min sometimes it takes 20min to crash… and it crashes at the point when i click on the youtube logo at the top left corner.

Hope this helps you, currently i have to switch to chrome again, as it is currently too annoying and there is no timeline / estimation or even an answer that someone is working on it.

PS: Yes i did just register to post this, that should show how bad those crashes are and how often.

This happened repeatedly on my Windows 8.1 Pro PC.
It never happened (that I recall) on my Windows 7 Home PC.
I also have a Windows 10 Home PC, but rarely use Brave on it. But I tried it there (actually, here) about 15 minutes ago, though, and Brave crashed there, too.

On Win 10, I didn’t see the problem again after toggling Sync Settings > Bookmarks.
On Win 8.1, I did see it again after toggling. But then I tried turning Sync Settings > Bookmarks OFF, doing a Settings > Privacy > “Clear browsing data” (for everything except for Cookies, Passwords, and Site Settings), restarting Brave, and then turning Sync Settings > Bookmarks back ON. That seems to have fixed it there.

Just a reminder for anyone here that this issue is known and currently being addressed by the team. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience and intend to have this resolved as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.

If you’re experiencing frequent crashes, please:

  1. Try disabling Brave Sync if the device you’re experiencing crashes on is part of a Sync chain.
  2. Either enable automatic crash reports or submit them manually (you can do this from brave://crashes) to give devs as much data as possible.
  3. Post your crash report IDs here in this thread – this allows devs to look at the conditions surrounding your specific crash.

I’m experiencing constant crashes within a minute or two after launching Brave, no user actions are needed, I open the browser, do nothing but wait, and the browser crashes. This started happening this Monday, September 23rd. Re-installing Brave, disabling bookmark sync, removing the browser user, clearing browser data as suggested by Russell does not help.

OS: macOS Mojave 10.14.6
Brave: Version 0.68.140 Chromium: 77.0.3865.90 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Macbook Pro 13inch (2018)

Weirdly, this does not happen with Brave Beta on the same system (version 0.70.100 Chromium 77.0.3865.90 (Official Build) beta (64bit)). Also, this does not happen with older Macbook Pro 13inch (early 2015) with exact same os version and browser version.

I have set automatic crash reporting on. Accessing brave://crashes shows just unsent crash reports. When I click send now it states that the crash reports are not yet uploaded. After the next crash, or restarting the browser seems that the list is somehow cleared, and some new (or old) unset reports are shown, so I can not send a list of uploaded crash report IDs.

If it is of any help, below a screenshot of some of the unsent crash reports:

This is from the macOS crash details. Had to cut some pieces out to fit into the message.

Note: seems like removing this folder and restarting the browser resolved the issue for me:
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser

Same here. Mac OSX 10.14.6 (18G103)

Sadly i am experiencing the same issue with brave Version 0.68.142 Chromium: 77.0.3865.90 (Official Build) (64-bit) crashing after about 15-30 seconds and having to end task it.
I have automatic crash reporting enabled, but i never see any crash reports in there, i have also tried to disable bookmark sync
and leaving the sync chain entirely, but it is stilll crashing consistently, apologies for not being able to provide any logs, but there
simply are none as far as i can see.

Having the same continuous problems:

Guys, why no updates?
You are making it impossible to rely on Brave for professional use, especially because of the lack of communication.

Or maybe I’m not aware of the channel where you communicate on the issue?

Is any update on the go?

Come on guys, please send some updates our way!!
Is it safe to enable sync again?

I don’t get it why you keep everybody in the dark. Or maybe I don’t have the right source of info? Can you give a pointer where it’s located?

Alright, it has now been 1 month since this fatal issue is not addressed, I don’t see how the software can be relied on.
I’m off to Vivaldi, and so are all the people I advise.

I’m really sad to have to switch, Brave gave a very good value. But how to trust it any longer with such issues and non-communication from the dev team? It baffles me.

Well, this will be my last post on the subject. Since the development team behind Brave obviously don’t care to post any information on this issue, I’ll not be wasting any more of my time either.

My bookmarks are a mess since this whole thing started. Either they are duplicated multiple times or they are re-ordered for no apparent reason - The bookmarks on my bookmarks bar move around every time I open Brave too.

How many crash reports do you need?

Uninstalling Brave right now. It was good while it lasted. Back to Firefox for me.

Not rhyme, no reason, just after a time Brave is gone, no message, no warning, nothing. Started a few days ago on one of my Windows 10 machines, now its happening on my MacBook Pro.
It started when I didn’t have Sync enabled. So I tried enabling Sync. Now I will try removing it.
It appears I was just able to cause it to happen by visiting a web page and immediately trying to scroll the page down:

I tried that because It seemed to be what caused it twice before. And in the earlier two cases, there was a rainbow wheel (waiting) icon for 10-20 seconds before it crashed. But not in other cases. Brave is up to date
Version 0.70.122 Chromium: 78.0.3904.87 (Official Build) (64-bit)

v1 is out and still no news on this topic.

Great.

I just started having this problem, or one like it, after I had a Windows crash which required OS reinstallation (Win7). For me, the crashes seem to be more related to mouse or keyboard activity but it does sometimes crash with no activity on my part. Sometimes I have been able to use it for 10 minutes or so before it crashed but there is no discernable pattern. Just now I have had Brave Settings open for 20 minutes or so with no crashes (I am typing this in Chrome). I just switched to a web tab and it crashed within 20 seconds.

I have never had sync enabled and am loathe to try turning it on and then off again due to the reported bookmark proliferation mess reported here.

I can upload crash reports here if requested but there have been a lot of those posted already. Don’t give up Brave devs, this is still an outstanding problem even tho the flood of reports has slowed recently! That not crashing with the settings tab focussed might be a clue.
