Brave Translate?

macOS 11 Big Sur, Brave v.1.77.97. Opened this website: https://dittadepner.ro, which is in Romanian. Usually Brave offers to translate non-English pages, but this time it didn’t.

The Brave Help page “How do I use Brave Translate?” says a little translate icon 文A should appear at the right end of the address bar, but it doesn’t. Brave Translate is turned On in preferences.

The Brave Help page says a right-click menu can also be used, so I tried that, selected “Translate to English”, and the page was translated. And the little 文A icon appeared in the address bar. Okay. But why doesn’t the 文A icon appear automatically in the first place, as shown on the Help page?

I click on the 文A icon and a little panel appears which says “Detected Language - English”. Why not “Romanian”, since obviously Brave Translate can deal with Romanian? I opened yandex.ru to get a Russian page, and the 文A icon shows automatically. I must click on the 文A icon to get the little panel, which says “Russian - English” as expected.

Tried sina.cn.com for a Chinese page. Both the 文A icon and the little drop-down panel appear automatically, and the panel says “Chinese (Simplified) - English”. I’ve noticed before that the panel appears automatically on some foreign-language pages, not on others.

I want to send the URL above https://dittadepner.ro (an excellent site by a very knowledgeable midwife) to a friend who, like me, doesn’t read Romanian. I also like to recommend Brave rather than Chrome (which I assume she uses since most do), spreading the word. I could recommend installing the Google Translate extension, but that’s another complication I’d rather avoid, if Brave can do the translation. But this odd behavior is confusing, and a bit of a hassle to explain to a non-expert user.

Can anyone elucidate?

@ElectricBrain mainly because their website reports that everything is English. If you right click on the page and choose to Inspect you’ll see like below. Here you’ll see where it has html lang= which is where they are saying what language their website is written.

The website is reporting that it’s in English.

And to give another example:

Go to https://www.konami.com/siteinfo/ja/shorturl.html and you’ll see it offers to translate. Choose to Inspect as mentioned before and it will show up that the language is in Japanese:

Side Note:

The website you initially shared isn’t 100% on any language. Such as if you look below, you’ll see Blog, Contact, and even Program Premium VIP Access which are all in English. Also hit the shopping bag/cart icon to the far right and it comes out and is in English.

Thanks for the info, that makes sense. And explains “Detected Language - English”, since that’s how the page identifies itself. So I’ve learned something new. I saw the “Blog”, “Contact”, etc., but figured it was just international Internetese.

Just tried the page in Chrome (which I don’t ordinarily use). It doesn’t show a translate icon in the address field, but the right click (ctrl-click in macOS) shows the same “Translate to English”, which translates the page to English, and now shows a Google Translate icon in the address field – though there’s no Google Translate extension installed, so it must be built-in. And a little panel that says “Detected Language - English” like in Brave.

Thanks again.
