Brave Safesearch doesn't block porn when selected to images (160 views and no answers)

Hi all

So as the title suggests, I have noticed that with Brave browser, even if I am using Safesearch on a mobile android (Samsung A02), with safesearch settings set to strict, pornographic images aren’t filtered on image search. They are however filtered on desktop browser quite nicely. I use the same Brave account for both, with settings synced. When on mobile brave browser, it does say that safesearch is switched on, yet there is explicit results right next to the statement. The searches themselves are not specific e.g (name of actor, porn)

Is there anyway to patch this gap or change the settings or otherwise?

Thanks
T

@Trooper149,
Thank you for reaching out.
I’m not able to reproduce this on my end — using Galaxy S22+ and Brave Search, setting Safe Search to Strict mode blocks any/all images from appearing. If anything it’s working too well, as absolutely no images at all are returned when safe search is set to Strict (as opposed to Google which does return some images, although they are filtered).

Does safe search work for you in other search engines? Additionally, can you provide me an exact term to test on my end?

Thanks for responding - I just tried it again (as I had safesearch.brave.com put on block through my Freedom app for the last week, and the block session has just come to an end) and safesearch.brave now seems to work fine. Specifically, I was using the term “tori black ####ed”.

As you have said however, when done through google search, it does display images, which are sensitive to the google safesearch settings on ones google account.

Again, I am not sure what has changed, perhaps it was my error, I am not sure, all I know is the 1/2 weeks ago, I could access porn via safesearch.brave on image search…

Please let me know if the issue occurs again.

Thank you

@Mattches Hello again, so I recognise where the issues is, when you go onto safesearch.brave.com on an android smartphone, type in the explicit search as mentioned previously, click search, and then click images, even if you have safesearch settings turned on, it gives you the option to “show this time” the explicit results.

I guess this is less of a fault and more of a design issue - but it seems futile to have a safesearch variant of the browser, if you allow users to easily disregard the safesearch function? Is there anyway to set the safesearch onto strict and then lock it completely/make it very difficult to reverse, specifically on an android smartphone? I’ve had this issue with google search as they make it too easy to deselect safesearch.

Quite simply, I don’t want porn in my life, and I don’t care for any search result that approximates a porn search. I want to block it completely yet it is difficult to find a browser which is compatible with google extensions.

Unfortunately, regardless of my answer here, you’re simply not going to be able to get those kind of results with any browser without the use of a third party extension and/or software that does this work for you.

I actually have not seen the Show this time option before (I do see it now after you’ve mentioned it) but even if that wasn’t there, anyone could simply tap on the safe search setting and turn it “off”. This is true of most other search engines as well.

I would look into apps or software that you can run on your devices that are specifically made for this purpose.
