This is sudden – both sites were playing fine a couple of days ago.
I note that this problem has been reported previously. However, I don’t know what Widevine is (not an app on my machine) or how I would update it. Nor do I find a lock symbol on the Amazon address bar.
Please launch Brave and type brave://components into the address bar and hit Enter. On the resulting page, scroll down and find the Widevine content decryption module. Please tell me what version number displays on this component:
I should add that I have a second Mac mini as part of my home entertainment system. The problem I describe suddenly arose on two different Macs. When per your suggestion I check system://components I get 21 components on both machines, no mention of “Widevines” on either machine.
I booted Safari on the entertainment mini and it runs NF and amzn prime fine.
While it’s conceivable that I made an update or system change on one Mac or the other, I definitely did not do the same thing on both machines on the same day. One is for work and one is for entertainment and light browsing on the big screen. The latter machine has no iCloud connection, thus my confusion as to how this could happen on two different machines at the same time. (???)
@igordian Widevine has to be enabled. Go to Brave’s settings → extensions which is brave://settings/extensions. From there you should see a toggle.
Widevine is what is called a DRM (Digital Rights Management) tool that many websites use. It makes it so you can’t record or download protected content. Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Netflix, and all of those places all use DRM to restrict pirating. If you don’t have a DRM tool, of which Widevine is the most commonly used one, then they wont’ let you view their content.
