the browser update tab said to update so i did. Now the brave browser is hosed, it will no longer open, just says no compatible with my OS.

Please note that the last supported version for macOS High Sierra is 1.57.64 as stated on our Help Center here:
If you’d like to keep using Brave in an older version, you can revert back to the last supported version here:
