Brave browser stopped working after latest update:
I tried to update Brave. I downloaded the package and install it. However, nothing else happened. All tabs stayed open, but now they don’t work. Nothing is able to open – even the “about brave option” or main page or anything.
I tried to install the older version, but nothing happened. I tried to install also the completely new version which can be found on brave browser webpage, but nothing happened.
I am worried about my bookmarks, so I tried to find the Brave browser folder on my desktop, but there isn’t any. And the bookmarks aren’t there as well.
I don’t know what else to do. I tried to find solution on internet, but I didn’t find any discussion on this topic. I am worried about closing the brave application, I don’t want to lose my bookmarks (and ideally also the open windows).
Operating system: macOS Monterey, version 12.6.5
I don’t know the version of Brave, “About Brave” page is not working.
Update [31/5/2023]
Browser is randomly working / not working. Sometimes it is possible to use the DuckDuckGo and search for things. However not always, it changes randomly. And often it is not possible to click on the links after searching for the keyword. But overall it is rather not working.
@helenden,
Please download and use the latest version of the browser. Or, update the browser from the version it’s on now to the latest. Also you can find your bookmarks and other browsing data can be found in
Can you tell me if you have any extensions installed in the browser at this time? Also, is this the first time you’ve installed/used the browser or was the browser working before and these issues just started?
I don’t have any folder with name “Brave Software” in Application Support folder. I don’t know how it is possible, but there just isn’t any. Also if I am searching explicitly for that folder, there isn’t any in my computer.
I am used to using Brave Browser, I’ve been using it for 3 or 4? years already I think.
I have two extensions, Grammarly and Google Translator.
@helenden,
First, I would try disabling Grammarly and testing to see if this makes any difference. Additionally, I am unclear as to how it’s possible not to have a Brave Software folder, especially if you’ve been using the browser for years now.
Just to 100% confirm we’re looking at the right place — the easiest way to find this folder (imo) is to open Finder, then click the Go option on the menu bar at the the top of your screen, hold the Option button down, then select Library, then Application support:
This BraveSoftware folder is where all your user data/browsing data/browser preferences are held. If you’ve been using the browser it has to be pulling this information from somewhere.
I disabled Grammarly and also Translator, but nothing happened. It is behaving the same.
I tried to follow your instructions, but I don’t know what you mean by holding the Option button and I didn’t find the straightforward way how to access Library from Go option. This is the path I followed when I was searching for bookmarks.
You might wish to see if Nektony App Cleaner & Uninstaller can find Brave on your system. The community restrictions won’t let me link to it, so use your favorite search engine.
You get 2 days of it fully functioning before it reverts to the free version (that can’t do much). You don’t need a credit card. The app will scan for all installed apps. If Brave is not listed, it’s not on your computer. If it finds Brave, have it remove all hints of it, restart, then reinstall Brave.
Of course, do a full backup before you do any of this. If you’ve had Sync turned on in Brave’s settings, data, favorites, etc. should restore from the cloud after it’s reinstalled.
Thank you @Mattches!
I found the bookmarks, finding the hidden library was like finding a hidden room or corridor in a house. I feel naive now but it is not the point.
I uninstalled Brave Browser and installed it again and now it works perfectly.
