When Viewing Certain Videos on Brave. Black Screen Appears

Description of the issue:

  1. When opening certain videos on YouTube like it has foreign characters (Japanese / Chinese), it will turn the whole screen into black.

  2. Closing the tab of the playing video will bring back the whole screen to normal

  3. I have tried Microsoft Edge (Chrome Version) and it doesn’t show the same issue and can playback the same videos without blackening the whole screen.

How can this issue be reproduced?
Go to any websites that play a video

  1. http://9gag.com/
  2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YF8vecQWYs
  3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HTAKT-JIaA

Expected result:

  • Able to watch videos without the screen blacking out

Brave Version( check About Brave):
Version 1.3.115 Chromium: 80.0.3987.87 (Official Build) (64-bit)

I can confirm that I have the same exact issue on my system. The same thing happens whenever I click on the links provided. Whenever I scroll down the page and the video player is no longer in sight the screen displays everything normally again. It seems like the issue only occurs whenever I use this browser. The whole screen goes black on sites like store.steampowered.com too, whenever you go on any page that contains a video and you attempt to run it. Might be an AMD related bug since my rig also has components by them:

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
Motherboard: ASRock B450M Pro4
RAM: 16 GB

Hopefully, this gets fixed since there are lots of video and websites that I can’t access at all when the screen is blacking out :frowning:

Yea. this issue made me quit using Brave coz i cant watch ANY video. As NiloticShadow said i have AMD rig too, so it might be AMD drivers fault, to be honest, their drivers were always shit

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 5700 (ASRock varient)
CPU: Ryzen 5 2600
MB: Gigabyte DS3H (kinda crap tbh)
RAM: 16GB G.skill Aegis clocked at 2666 MHZ

Is Brave developers even reviewing reports. There’s no official response from them acknowledging this issue

It seems like its been reported a bunch of times. Used the search engine on here to find other threads with the same exact issue. Users have been complaining since last year so its hard to say whether the fix is on their priority or not. Might have to check out AMD forums at some point and see if people have made any mentioning of this.

Edit: Seems to be fixed on my end after revisiting Steam to play some videos on there. Haven’t had any problems with YouTube videos in a while either.

Same here, however on Twitter. When the page loads a video. There’s still a slight flicker then it will go normal. This happens every video loads.

I wonder what’s Brave Browser’s problem with AMD Graphics.

It seems AMD Graphic Driver Issue:

Fixed:

Some video content in Chrome™ may appear as a black screen or be unresponsive on Radeon RX 5000 series graphics products when hardware acceleration is enabled.
