Description of the issue:
I’m trying to switch from Firefox but brave is annoying Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): 1. 2. 3.
1 - Brave search. Clicking in the search field adds a magnifying glass on the left. This repositions the text so double-clicking on a word often ends up selecting the wrong word because everything has moved.
2 - Unless the window is so wide as to practically fill the screen, the tab icons don’t display any test even though there is room to make them wider.
3 - Unlike firefox, there is no way to customize the toolbar so that my favorite extensions are on the left where they would always be visible even if the window is narrow.
4 - there are unnecessary items in the url field (e.g. “install brave community” and “brave shields”) that take up space that could show more of the url. These could do just as well on the menu since they are rarely used.
5 - I seem to be forced to have an image on the home page. I don’t need it.
Actual Result (gifs and screenshots are welcome!):
as above Expected result:
as above Reproduces how often:
always Operating System and Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu):
All operating systems
While it doesn’t address the idea of removing the icons, I do want to make sure you’re aware that if you go to brave://settings/appearance, which is Settings → Appearance there are two toggles that at least have you see the full URL and all. These are Use wide address bar and Always show full URLs
To be fair, they could have just set it to a different background in the same space and just called it the menus. But they kept it there to reduce confusion as they are all about the URL we’re visiting.
Nobody is forcing you to have an image. Have you not taken the time to look through settings to see what you can do?
You can set your Home Page to anything you want. You don’t need to have it on your Dashboard. So go to brave://settings/getStarted which is Settings → Get Started and you’ll see there are options.
On Startup and it lets you decide if you want it to be on your New Tab Page, whatever website you left off at, or you can set custom websites to open to.
Then below that you have New Tab Page where you can choose to see Dashboard, Homepage, or Blank Page. If you choose Blank Page, for example, the page will be blank.
Part of that, just below, it says Customize new tab page. You also could get to this by hitting Customize when you’re on the NTP as Dashboard. And wouldn’t you know it, there’s an option that says Show Background Images that you can disable along with a lot of other settings.
You can see it’s not even 1/3 of my screen and I can see text on all tabs. But yeah, if you’re opening a ton of tabs, then it runs out of space, so you end up with something like:
