Search in Tabs (Cmd+Shift+A) is shown to the left of the browse and mostly outside of the screen

Description of the issue:

In one of the two profiles I’m using simultaneously, pressing on Cmd+Shift+A opens the Tab Search popup to the left of the browser, and mostly hidden “behind the screen boundary”:

Steps to reproduce:

No exact reproduction steps. It had been working fine for weeks, until today it suddenly broke - and only in one of the profiles.

Quitting the browser and/or reopening the profile window does not help.

Reproduces how often:

Always after it happened once.

Brave Version:

Version 1.40.113 Chromium: 103.0.5060.114 (Official Build) (arm64)

Additional information:

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021)
Apple M1 Max
MacOS Monterey 12.4

Hi and welcome to the community. :slightly_smiling_face:

The post below was from Brave support staff (moderator) in a different topic. But it made me wonder if this may be your problem also.

If you do not have access to the “Hamburger menu”, you can go to brave://settings/appearance and try adjusting zoom there. Hope this helps!

@anton_adelaide,
Yeah that’s quite strange given that the tab search button should be appearing on the top-right corner of the browser:

Maybe be a zoom issue, maybe an issue related to multiple monitors (are you using more than one monitor?), may also be an issue related to extensions — do you have any installed at this time?

My monitor is connected to my laptop, but the laptop is always closed, so its monitor is off.

Anyway, my setup has not changed since many months ago - same monitors setup, same browser, same extensions.

The tab search functionality was working just fine all this time.

@anton_adelaide,
Sometimes an application (Brave in this case) will update it’s code or the Chromium base will change or one of the extensions will get an update that simply breaks stuff — even if it was working perfectly the day prior.

Can you please try opening Brave on your laptop screen directly (I would even disconnect it from the external monitor temporarily) and then try opening the tab search pane and check to see if it opens properly?

Continuing from here: Search in Tabs (Cmd+Shift+A) is shown to the left of the browse and mostly outside of the screen

P.S. Not sure how automatically closing issues helps - now in order to revive that old issue, I just have to duplicate it and therefore clutter the space. But here we go, again:

@Mattches , answering your question:

Yes, I did try that, and it did not help. Here is the screenshot:

Please let me know if there is any way in which I can help you identify the cause and fix it.

@anton_adelaide,
Sorry for the late response here. This was a known issue in the browser but I believe it’s been fixed in recent updates. Can you please update the browser to the latest version (v1.43.93 at the time of writing this) if you haven’t already and tell me if the issue is still present in the latest release?

Thank you

Checked v1.44.108, the issue still persists. @Mattches

@anton_adelaide,
Thank you for the update. Also it appears I was incorrect, the issue was not resolved in the update as I stated previously. I’ve found the open issue here and have added your report to the thread for the developers to review:

I will also ping some team members to try and get some eyes on the issue.

Thank you. Just updating to prevent auto-close of this topic.

So, I cannot flag my topic for review and ask mods to restore it. So I’m forced to create this topic to revive my older topic that for some reason gets closed automatically. We’re still waiting for the fix, and the “Tab Search” is basically not usable.

Hello there @anton_adelaide please accept my apologies for this issue. Could you please try opening your main profile in private or guest mode to see if the issue persist? If it does not happen, try disabling your extensions to see if this is the cause of the issue.

You can open a Guest Window by going to Main menu → Open Guest window:

  1. On your computer, open Brave.
  2. At the top right, click Menu → More tools → Extensions.
  3. On to the extension you want to remove, click Remove.
  4. Confirm by clicking Remove.

Let me know if that works.

Hi @Kevin_cc , I have tried both several times along last few months, nothing helped.

@anton_adelaide you mentioned on the previous post that the issue was only limited to a single profile, please try installing the Beta or Nightly version of Brave to see if the issue persists on those versions.

Let me know if anything changes.

@Kevin_cc works in Beta:

So what are our next steps in order to identify the cause and fix the issue?

If it works on Beta, it may be related to a configuration on your browser or an extension installed on it, on this case I kindly suggest you export your data from the release version to the beta version to see if the issue appears when this is done.

Searching for “export” in settings yields no results. How do I do it?

If the issue does exist in all profiles, an alternative hypothesis would be that it is resolved in whatever version # is currently ‘Beta’ and if you wait it out for a bit (looks like roughly 3 weeks) you won’t have to do anything.
