I know I can go into settings and disable Answer with AI from there however, it should be an “Opt In” to use AI rather than an “Opt Out”. Additionally, there is still a button in the search box itself on search.brave.com that references this functionality.
I intentionally have been using Brave because I wanted a lighter weight search engine that just give me results and having ANY usage of AI in my search results gives me significant concerns. The fact that this was rolled out to me WITHOUT MY CONSENT makes me question greatly the decisions that are being made by this company.
The roll out of AI should be IMMEDIATELY reversed.
Meanwhile the AI being so practical is the reason I switched from DuckDuckGo to Brave Search and making the latter better was a factor in my decision to switch to Brave with web discovery project and Google fallback mixing, so I disagree.
However I would hope the search URLs become more configurable so I could specify region to search in browser policy and you could specify that you don’t want to see AI without having to visit the settings page every time.
@Michael.Donlon,
Yes, this can be disabled for search.brave.com on the Settings page as well as in the browser in Settings --> Leo. You should only have to change this setting once.
@Mikaela you can select search result regions by clicking the “tune” icon:
The “Answer with AI” does not disappear after I toggle all the Leo options off. This is what I’d like to get rid of. I’m finding it so annoying, after I go through the effort of removing it in settings, I would like it to be truly gone.
I have turned off every instance of Leo I could find, yet every time I search, there’s automatically an answer generated. I would very much like to disable this, as I’m aware of the increased energy use of AI, as compared to regular search results. Why do this all the time, instead of giving us an option when we want it?
Oy, vey – I just realized that there is YET ANOTHER setting that needs to be turned off – you need to go to search.brave.com, click on the gear in the top right corner; adjust your zoom level, if needed, so you can see the big blue button on the bottom of that pop-out and click on it to get to all the settings. I suppose there’s a zoom level where you can see the radio button to turn off the AI function, since I could see the text, yet none of the options until I clicked on the big blue button. Now it’s off. Phew.
thank you SO much. not only do i actively despise the AI, it interferes with the accuracy of my work. I agree with those above who said the AI should be something you toggle ON, not toggle off. the percentage of people who actively desire to use it are smaller than those who would rather not.
Sadly it was @Saoiray trying to gaslight that other user, and if he’s trying to gaslight again, here is that response: Is there a way to ACTUALLY disable ai from brave search? - #9 by Saoiray. The fact that Leo keeps enabling itself its beyond absurd. It should be such an easy task for Brave’s devs… or even better, have it off by default and users require to opt-in, that will fix that.
Part of the first quote was them saying they want AI to be disabled. So I asked them if they had turned it off in settings. This is a very clear cut question. Obviously it will continue answering if a person has it enabled.
The second part was looking at a concern they stressed and I asked for a specific example. If people can give examples of problems then it is easier to see and fix. But when they are hypothetical situations, such as theirs was, then there’s not much to be done. Of course, their reply of referring to people as “retards” wasn’t a good look either.
Anyone can throw terms around. No gaslighting was done there. As indicated, it sought to find out their situation. Was it turning itself on after they turned it off or were they leaving it on and then just coming to complain?
Then when speaking of worries it might incite violence, I asked specifically how. You would be correct in that their reply was not helpful.
So worried that people might see some information and then go do something they shouldn’t? Does that mean Brave needs to highly censor everything and can’t show data that anyone might contest? Heck, even your coming to accuse of “gaslighting” is enough to push some people to incite violence. Does that mean if I took my frustration out on someone that it would be your fault? Should we prevent you from ever speaking to anyone on the internet again?
This is indeed some feedback from people. Just keep in mind that Brave also gets feedback from people who feel the opposite. They take not only feedback from people but also the usage data collected from people who visit to make a determination of what features to add, remove, or change. Currently people who feel the same on this are in the minority. As such, at least for the time being, they just have the option for you to be able to change settings.
If you can provide more details it may be more helpful. As it stands now, settings are saved via cookies and there is no account. This means if you clear your cookies, the settings will revert. Is this what you are experiencing?
I came here because bravesearch ai auto response now freezes the browser until it finishes which can take up to 10 seconds. This is abysmal, as if the authoritative but absolutely wrong responses now it gets in the way of even using the search engine as a search engine. Get off the AI bandwagon it was always a scam.
First, there does appear to be an issue where the Answer with AI toggle re-enables itself after being disabled. This is a bug and not intentional. I have opened an issue for this on our Github here:
Second, on the note of AI giving incorrect answers, I just want to be clear that this is simply a property of AI/LLMs in general, not just Leo. This is referred to as the AI “hallucinating”. It is denoted in our Leo FAQ here and we encourage users to double-check/verify fact-based information when using [any] AI:
Another small update here — just wanted to note that in addition to opening the above issue, I’ll continue to push for this icon to be hidden when that option is toggled off.
That said, in the meantime, for those of you who want to remove it entirely from view, you can use the built in Block elements feature to hide the icon (note that you can do this for any elements on any site as well):
This is why I provided the definitions/explanation of what is happening above. First, it is not incorrect half the time. And again, to be clear, the AI is not lying to you, even if it is incorrect sometimes.
To “lie” by definition implies intention. The AI is not attempting to mislead you, it is simply still training and is not able to provide accurate information for all questions. This is true of all AI and all LLMs at this time.
In general, nobody should be reading one answer from an AI or one article from one source or one headline and taking whatever is said as fact. You should always verify information with additional sources regardless of what source your information originally came from.
Lastly, as stated above, when the AI is disabled, you do not get that box and Leo doesn’t answer you. So if you’re not interested in it, then turn it off.
@supertaco When you search the internet, you encounter information of all kinds—not everything is factual. Similarly, AI gathers content from a variety of sources and responds to the best of its ability. However, like any tool, it isn’t always up-to-date or entirely accurate.
AI typically provides sources at the end of its responses so you can verify where the information comes from and dig deeper if needed. It’s important to remember that AI is a tool to assist, not a definitive answer.
If you don’t find it helpful or prefer not to use it, you can simply disable it or choose not to engage with it. It’s easy to scroll past, just as you might with any other content that doesn’t interest you.
Again, you do not have to use, interact, or read any information provided by AI. The issue with the AI toggle turning itself back on appears to have been resolved (I can no longer reproduce it). So in Search settings, toggle Answer with AI “off” and you will not see it at the top of the search results anymore.
This is still an issue, a very annoying issue. The button “Answer with AI” auto-re-enables immediately after toggling off. I found out that this happens if I have enabled “block all cookies.” So, making this button work based on cookies is a terrible idea because you are forcing me to select a specific cookies option for it to work. (should be a global setting that remains regardless of the session or cookies).
However, even if I allow cookies and toggle off the “Answer with AI” button, and reload the page to check if the option remains disabled, the search engine (brave) keeps pushing me useless AI-generated answers.
I also agree that this “AI answer” feature must be an “opt-in option” not an “opt-out”, but if you are following the path of dishonest companies pushing features enabled by default, at least you should make sure to provide users with real options to manage the options and allow us to disable this, easy and fast.
I just specifically moved from Chrome to Brave as my second browser (the main one is Firefox) because of Google’s policies of forcing AI on us… Whenever I need an answer from AI, I can go and use the AI of my preference, I don’t need this on my search results…
I think I’ll say goodbye to Brave and continue using the only real browser that still gives users the ability to have full control of the settings: Firefox.
