I just changed my default search engine from Google Search to Brave Search, because Google doesn’t allow me to opt out from AI generated answers.
I disabled Leo AI generated answers in my Brave Browser settings.
Now I searched from the word “vero” and I got on top of the page an AI generated answer - even if it doesn’t say to be by Leo.
I’m very surprised.
Is forcing AI answers part of a Brave policy?
In this case, I will opt for another search engine.
@lmr because they are two different things. So the Leo one in Brave’s settings is for the AI that’s built into the browser, which is Leo. This is only available for people using Brave browser and would not be something seen anywhere else. It can be used independently and isn’t tied to any website.
Answer With AI is only available on Brave Search and is different than Leo. This is available to anyone visiting Brave Search regardless of the web browser.
Since they are two completely different things, there are two different settings.
Out of curiosity, are you using a language other than English? One of the things that was recently shared is that since Brave Search doesn’t have its own translation yet, they are using AI for it. So if we put any phrases in and it’s translating, we’ll see an AI response.
Beyond that, you have to be mindful of what you’re clicking. While we can disable Answer With AI in the settings, they also explicitly argue that it says Automatically. In other words, if we hit the AI button it will give an AI response.
Yes, I’m using different languages - in this case, it was Italian.
I have no problem with Brave using AI for translation, but I don’t want AI generated content as an answer.
But it does seem to be something more. Because if I changed to even just a question, it answers. This was without me hitting the Answer With AI button and with the settings for it to answer automatically turned off.
This is not happening consistently.
Yesterday I got an AI generated answer for “onto prefisso” (as well as @Saoiray did, see the conversation above), today I can’t reproduce it.
But today I got this when typing “what is onto prefisso” in the Brave search box:
I’m glad to hear that this is not what is expected after toggling off AI Answers.
I think it’s still something Brave should fix. What do you think? Should this be reported to some “bug section”?
I have been having the same problem. I randomly (and also not consistently) get AI-generated answers even though I disabled it everywhere I could (browser + search settings). The option of “answering with AI” also occasionally appears, even though I disabled it. I also sometimes search in different languages than English, sometimes in Spanish and sometimes in French. I don’t have a problem with Brave using AI translation either, but I really don’t want AI search answers.
I hope this bug can get fixed and would love to hear if there has been anything new recently on that topic. Thank you.
I had the same thing happen to me while looking up for the 100th time how to ACTUALLY remove AI haha, yeah pretty ironic… Still getting the same problem though, and it is very frustrating because I’ve been looking for a new browser ultimately and Brave would be exactly what I’m looking for if not for forcing AI on us, which I really am totally against, so having an AI search launched against my will once every three searches is extremely frustrating for me.
Yeah, i;m starting to get a bit pissed at this. It’s parrying the spy speakers from google/amazon language, with their “it’s off”, but if it’s off how can it listen for my activate word. lol
Basically, what it says on the screen means nothing, it’s what it does in the code what matters..
I’m using a mix of brave browser with brave search, and librewolf with brave search, and searching with both still come back with AI answers with everything set to off for AI answers in all their settings. SHADY INDEED.
Ublock origin, using hide elements, is the only way so far to disable “seeing” my “opted in” to being an AI test participant. SHADY INDEED.
Yeah I found another browser that also avoids tracking and paid advertising while not forcing AI on anyone, so I think I’ll be using that one for now until Brave fixes this. It doesn’t seem to be something they want to fix though, so I won’t be putting too much hope into this.
Made an account just to post here and say I’m officially no longer using brave browser OR search due to this. I’m tired of companies forcing AI slop down our throats and dragging their feet when people pipe up about it. Stupid move, well done.
