On Youtube.com brave blocks the videos not only the ads

Update Brave Ad Block Updater - Version: 1.0.395 (or better) in brave://components. Then refresh YT page.

Update went out

Exactly this same problem started happening for me at the same time as @Ziko . I am also on Windows 7.

Bunch of other users have been experiencing the same issue at around the same time as us: https://www.reddit.com/r/brave_browser/comments/15gplmn/youtube_just_stopped_working/

It sucks that there isn’t a browser alternative for us. The major 3 flavors (Chromium, Firefox and Safari) are big tech and decided to drop support for Windows 7 and 8 at the same time.

Google obviously break these things on purpose as they’ve done the exactly same thing multiple times in the past; the question is, is Brave willing to backport hotfixes for older versions, similar to how Python kept hotfixing Python 2 for a very long time?
I am never going to run a newer Windows OS, and I do plan to eventually get rid of this Windows 7 build in favor of a Linux build, but I simply don’t have the time to redo all of my custom OS tweaks/configurations (including my IDEs), either way, I will probably avoid newer versions of Chromium-based browsers if they start supporting WEI.

No dice. Updated to 1.0.395, cleaned all data from you* domains, restarted the browser. Youtube search doesn’t work at all, video comments won’t load, clicking on a video may or may not load it, most of the time it gives the “you are offline” message (direct link has a better chance of loading it, but I can’t change things like “Video Quality”).

yes here is screenshot…i also have this issue

Tested here, Brave Ad Block Updater - Version: 1.0.395

For me, shield shows this one as the only one being blocked: https://www.youtube.com/youtubei/v1/log_event?alt=json&key=AIzaSyAO_FJ2SlqU8Q4STEHLGCilw_Y9_11qcW8

All the things I’ve mentioned are still broken for me though.

Brave 1.47.186 Chromium: 109.0.5414.119 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Update the browser, could be part of issue. Test in Brave Beta as another test

I can’t. Like the other guy, I am stuck at Windows 7. This was working fine until today though.

Your video has the following addresses blocked:
https://play.google.com/log?*
https://www.youtube.com/api/stats/qoe?*
https://www.youtube.com/ptracking?*
https://www.youtube.com/youtubei/v1/log_event?*

EDIT: uBlock Origin blocks them and is working fine. Shield breaks the site, like the other guys have mentioned.

I had to disable the shields again moments ago myself. It was fine up until my brother got on and it’s the same behavior. This is beyond nuts. It was alright a couple of hours ago when me and @fanboynz did some things.

Nothing has changed since the update went out, do you have another Brave profile you can test in? Does it work in private window mode? Which version of Brave are you testing in?

I’m still on 1.47.186. I did the update as instructed for the component side of things and this happened to me again.

i think itop is also chromium like brave but it supports older windows version so i dont understand why brave refuse to add support…

we dont need security based updates but we need other important updates like features, components, runtime, webview…etc

i can still see brave update is still running everytime during windows startup so its not impossible for brave to provide an update
Screenshot Capture - 2023-08-03 - 13-47-11

had a site which has a youtube video embedded in it… with shields on, i cant see the video… with shields off, i can see/play the video

looked at shields and shields seem to block this specific line

https://www.youtube.com/youtubei/v1/log_event?alt=json&key=AIzaSyAO_FJ2SlqU8Q4STEHLGCilw_Y9_11qcW8

anyway to tell the brave shields to not block this specific line to experiment whether due to this line block, link is not working?

Answering the question, no, it doesn’t work in a private tab either.

I generally browse Youtube within private tabs to prevent it from “suggesting” videos later on. At first I thought this bug was some incompatibility between private tabs and Youtube (I’ve quite a few self-written extensions failing when running them in a Tor+private tab, chrome.action.disable for instance, always fails for Tor+private, even when you’re 100% sure the tab id passed to it is correct).

Seems like this problem is mostly affecting those stuck with Windows 7 and 8 from the looks of it.

Only affects older windows 7/8 builds, still investigating whether we can get around it.

Also note, that new adblock scripts features are incoming to cover youtube ads/baits. And it won’t be compatible with older Brave builds (since they will lack support for these scripts.)

please keep the yt based scripts as separate as all other websites are working correctly without issues

im ok with not using/missing out on using yt in PC( as i could use yt on smart tv if needed) but other websites are important and they work good… do not break the existing functionality… hope shields will live longer

Damn :frowning:

W7 x64 here using Brave, and indeed yesterday evening something changed where Youtube now doesn’t work at all with “Block Trackers & Ads” enabled in Brave Shields.

Something changed a couple of weeks ago where it would play a “blank” ad (black screen but with sound), now it just won’t allow me to browse youtube at all…

Yes yes I know unsupported etc, but works fine on Firefox! Other sites seem to be fine, too. If this could somehow be backwards-compatible tweaked to work with W7 Brave (1.47.186), that would be great. Youtube is one of the main websites I use and it would be a shame to not use Brave with it, or have to switch all the Shields off…

Disabling shields and relying on uBlock Origin seems to be the way, if there is no interest to backport these changes to Windows 7 and 8.

At this point though, Chromium-based browsers are pissing me off more than they are worth.

  1. I can’t install my own self-signed extensions without unpacking them first (Google censorship for extensions outside of their store). This has been an issue for a long time, without a resolution from Brave: https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/20296
  2. The future is bleak with WEI in the horizon: https://github.com/chromium/chromium/commit/6f47a22906b2899412e79a2727355efa9cc8f5bd
  3. Lack of support for Windows 7 and 8, despite them still being popular enough due to backlashes involving Windows 10 and 11.
  4. Excessive resources usage that keeps getting worse.

Forking Chromium for an open privacy-oriented project was a mistake; way too much Google debt, not to mention further establishing another monopoly for them by relying on their technology.

EDIT: Brave Ad Block Updater - Version: 1.0.397 appears to have fixed the issue for now.

Thanks for telling me that the update came as I have been busy. It’s fine for now but who knows how long this will last. I do agree on points 2 & 4 in that the second one will all but kill the internet as we know it and the fourth is something that while an annoyance, it’s not too bad.

I also wish there was an alternative for us folks as Pale Moon ain’t worth nothing anymore and that who project went through a lot of drama that nearly killed the browser and even now, it barely can run stuff like YouTube without it hitting your performance. Chromium browsers unfortunately make up a majority of what people use on the net and the sad thing is that it may be that way for the foreseeable future. I dropped PM like a hot potato once I found Brave and now this happens and is making me question the future too.

a python based gui browser with cross platform support would be great
