NOTICE: Youtube ads bypassing Shields — issue is known

Hello,
Before we get inundated with a bunch of different threads reporting this — we are aware that Youtube Ads are at this time (as of Feb. 20, 2024) bypassing Shields.

This appears to be an issue in all release channels:
Stable: v1.62.125
Beta: v1.64.80
Nightly: v1.65.17

And with all relevant components updated:
Brave Ad Block Updater - Version: 1.0.4150
Brave Ad Block List Catalog - Version: 1.0.50
Brave Ad Block Resources Library - Version: 1.0.84

As stated here, this will likely be an ongoing battle with Youtube. I will leave this thread open for users to report the behavior and/or any other details that may be useful for our ad-block team and use this is as the primary thread for this issue at this time.

Thank you all for your understanding — I will update this thread as soon as i have more information for you.

I’m still seeing ads. I have version 1.0.4270 of the Brave Ad Block Updater and it says it’s up to date. I’ve also checked you updates for on everything else in components.

→ Still seeing Ads even on recent update
Brave Ad Block Updater - Version: 1.0.4316
Status - Component already up to date
Check for update

As of today the only way there is to bridge this issue is to clear cache/cookies and relaunching Brave to have a free day without Youtube acting up !

Or copy/pasting the ytb link into private browser !

Good luck !!

Well Hello there… I’ve just noticed about the problem with youtube… I’ve tried to update the Brave AdBlock Updater, but I cant for some reason. I am getting the following message:
image
(and with it the youtube ads :upside_down_face: - is there any way to solve this?)

[Edit: Is it okay, that I reply here, or should I create a new Ticket?]

Brave Ad Block Updater - Version: 1.0.4401

Acting all good for 2 videos…then Youtube got to me again… Do I need to restart pc or uninstall/reinstall Brave so that Youtube stops bothering me or am I the only one experiencing this issue with the newest update? (Private tabs here I come)

@Pika5326,
Latest update is v1.0.4403 which is working fine for me — please try updating again (brave://components) and re-test.

@Mattches Thx for the quick reply !
I’ve updated until :
Brave Ad Block Updater - Version: 1.0.4404
Status - Up-to-date

And my issue persists. The issue in question is youtube loading in infinite loop because I think Brave tries to overloop youtube ads but youtube keeps popping up the message and brave tries to infinite loop the crap out of youtube…
Last update I’ve erased cookies and cache and after 10 or so videos Youtube was back at it again…Same is happening with all the latest updates… I know it’s not your guys fault It’s just Youtube pissing me off as of right now unfortunately…

@Pika5326,
No worries thank you for replying. Will let our webcompat guys know about the behavior and see if there is anything that can be done.

There was an update for youtube rule

Is it still an issue? @Pika5326 does it occur in private window mode?

@fanboynz as a matter of fact I’ve just 3h after updating to
Brave Ad Block Updater - Version: 1.0.4404
Status - Up-to-date

After the fact that it wasn’t working at that time, it seems that it has reverted back to youtube not beeing a pain in my butt. I’ll keep you posted if those changes reverts back to being negative tomorrow

Keep an eye on it, let me know if its still an issue

@fanboynz Good Moooorning !
Seems to be fine and working properly. I had a scare as only once brave restarded 3 times the same video to finally load up normally but seems to be working properly since the latest update !

Thanks again for your assistance on the issue at hand !! Good luck !

UPDATE 1.42pm → I had to try to open two different webpage with youtube and launch 2 videos simultaneously…seems like I broke it again… or Youtube has updated on their side…XD back to private window x’)

UPDATE 6.30pm → Youtube has settled down with update :
Brave Ad Block Updater - Version: 1.0.4424

Brave Ad Block Updater - Version: 1.0.4426
When Brave hits an ad that should be at the time of the video, brave goes into an infinite loop…I still don’t know If I’m still the one experiencing that and don’t know what causes Brave to act like this. I know every dev are on the case in the battle of youtube and I wish them luck on this…It’s getting infuriating at this point…

I make sure to keep up with Brave updates when prompted & I close out Brave completely to clear cache, cookies, & history regularly or whenever I see YT trying to insert warnings about ads. That usually does the trick.

Brave Ad Block Updater - Version: 1.0.4500
ChromeOS

A few days ago, everything was correctly blocked on Youtube.
Then, end cards started showing up… I’ve done the usual steps of clearing the cache and deleting anything saved by YouTube, and am at the newest version as recommended - all to no avail.

Hello Mattches

Could you (or anyone as a matter of fact) help me with this problem:

I’ve been getting this error for a month now. Should I reinstall Brave?

I also checked with Wireshark, that there is a request to an IP, when I update it…

Thanks for the reply

A firewall blocking access to it? Or maybe profile related? Could test Brave Beta which opens a new profile, and see if downloads there.

Hello
Thanks for your reply.

  1. I live in a country, where the gov. and ISP’s don’t block IP/DNS much… so I don’t think that a firewall blocked the update.
  2. I downloaded the beta version and it works (updated) there.

I genuinely don’t know what’s wrong.
(I have to say, the Beta version has a quite nice design. love it)

Thanks for your answer.
