Mac OSX 12 Monterey browser crash when Apple Speak Section

I have text to speech enabled on this Macbook Pro (M1 Max). If I select text on screen and hold down a shortcut key, it reads that text aloud. I’ve tested it a few times in brave and elsewhere and it seems to work fine, but when I do it while downloading a large file it crashes brave. What’s worse is it zaps it off screen, no crash logs are saved. Brave asks to restore tabs, but that’s about it. I’m guessing there’s an apple “privacy” conflict happening?

Expected result:. Play audio, read text aloud.

Brave Version( check About Brave):
Version 1.31.87 Chromium: 95.0.4638.54 (Official Build) (arm64)

Additional Information:. 2021 Macbook Pro M1 Max 16" 32GB Memory

I downloaded the Brave browser yesterday on my Mac with M1 chip and Monterey operating system and it just crashes. Can someone from @support please respond?

@kwells,
Can you please tell me if automatic crash reporting is enabled (Settings --> Privacy and Security)?

If not, can you please go to brave://crashes and submit the crash report manually and tell me the crash report ID?

@projectileobjects,
To be clear, this only happens when downloading large files? Can you give me an example of the type of large file (or site you’re downloading from) so that I can test the behavior on my end?

Hi @Mattches

Looks like it just happens randomly when using Mac’s Text to speech to read aloud. I changed the shortcut keys thinking it might of been that, but I’ve had it happen about 6 times so far in the past week without a clue as to why. And Yes, I have “Help imrpove Brave” enabled.

You’ll need to enable “spoken content” and create a hot key to experience what I’m experiencing. (Or other people who are dyslexic or visually impaired). Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help. Thanks!

It happened in Gmail twice yesterday after composing some simple emails and asking the mac to read them aloud.

@projectileobjects,
Thank you for the information.
I’m still unable to reproduce the issue. “Spoken content” works for me as intended. Can you run a test for me to see if the issue is specific to the profile you’re using?

  1. Create a new browser profile
  2. Close the original profile window (so that you only have one Brave window open, using the new profile)
  3. Visit any site and use the “Speak selection” shortcut and see if the browser crashes

@projectileobjects,
It looks like were able to reproduce the crash and have opened the following issue to track and address it:
