Troubleshooting technical issues is much easier when both the user and support agent practice clear communication. For this reason, we have provided the template below for you to fill out with information about your issue. Please provide as much detail as possible so we can most efficiently resolve your problem.
Description of the issue:
The back button is broken all the time. I’ll visit a website, click a link and then try to hit back and it often goes to an empty tab screen.
Expected result:
You return to the ESPN home page.
Brave Version( check About Brave): Version 1.68.1 (145)
Mobile Device details M1 iPad Pro, iOS 17.6.1
Additional Information:
This also sometimes happens when going through https://search.brave.com. I’ll visit a link, press the back button and the brave search results are skipped.
Messing around with the ESPN steps again right now, it mostly does skip the home page, but there were a couple instances where it worked as expected. This happens all the time to me though. Maybe the back button is some how registering as being hit multiple times? Might be something else. Thanks!
That said, the behavior you describe sounds like what can happen when a website redirects. What I mean is sometimes links can send somewhere but then bounce you once more. In this case, you would have to hit back multiple times or hold the back button and choose the link you originated from. If not, then hitting back the one time just brings you to the redirect, which leaves you at a blank screen or would send you back to the same spot you just tried going back from.
I appreciate the response. I’ve looked into it more and I think I had a habit of hitting the back button twice because it would get really slow on loading the previous page.
“A race condition or race hazard is the condition of an electronics, software, or other system where the system’s substantive behavior is dependent on the sequence or timing of other uncontrollable events, leading to unexpected or inconsistent results. It becomes a bug when one or more of the possible behaviors is undesirable.”"
Ah, good to know, @ryanstrug. I’m pretty sure I had never heard the terminology as you’ve shared. There’s always something new to learn. Thanks for sharing.
I cannot reproduce this issue either on my iPad but the issue might actually be specific to iOS 17.6.1. I tested using the steps provided both by @ryanstrug as well as @samyui but couldn’t reproduce — then noticed I haven’t updated yet.
Updating now then will retest and get back to you about this.
Hi @ryanstrug@samyui - yesterday we released an update, v1.69. Can you update and let me know if you continue to see the issue? I’m not able to reproduce and am on iOS 17.6.1.
I typed in espn.com, went to a link (had to press twice for some reason), then pressed the back button in the bottom left. The issue also occurs if you side swipe from the left of the screen.
That said, I did have an instance where the back button worked as expected going through this flow. I would guess it’s a race condition.
I am on the latest version of Brave: 1.69.1
Though currently I’m on iOS 18 Release Candidate; expecting that to release to all in a couple days.
