Hello @demortipus

could you disable all extension and try to go to brave://settings/importData and see if it work fine or not

Sure. I don’t remember ever installing any extensions but will find that setting and try. Will advise.

Ok disabled all extentions https://i.imgur.com/phquuQq.png
Then as soon as I opened a new tab and pasted brave://settings/importData. Browser closed unexpectedly same as before.

could you go to menu then create new profile and then close all other window then go to the same link i mentioned and see if it open the import setting or not?

Sorry, late reply. Did as you requested and tried with new profile newly created. The same thing happened. I see the settings page open for about 1 second then everything closes unexpectedly. I really hope we can get this problem resolved I really like the concept of Brave Browser and want to start using it all the time, but don’t due to the inconvenience of having to manually remember passwords and settings when I do.

So by creating a new profile should have taken the browser back to the native default state?

Also one more question I want to ask, for I am somewhat tech savvy. Is there any logs that perhaps we could look at that are generated we could look at for the purpose of tracking the condition that is causing this issue?

@demortipus,
There are logs generated for this that we can look into, but that will have to be passed onto the devs to review and may take some time. Let’s try a few steps before we resort to that.

First, did you only just recently install the browser? That is, have you been using it for a while and are just now attempting to import data, or were you trying to import this data right after installing?

Additionally, what browser are you attempting to import the information from?

Yes been using for awhile and problem did not just arise. I still use it for certain things that give higher crypto faucet rewards like https://pipeflare.io/ which is actually how I found out about Brave Browser. I have always had this problem and eventually gave up trying to solve it. Instead of using the browser as default 100% of the time browser I just went back to using Google Chrome for my default browser since I did not want to deal with the headaches of using Brave Browser without the settings imported. I have had Brave installed for about 3 months give or take and I always remember the import setting not working since I had it. But since I found out that you get more rewards in BAT crypto the more you use Brave I would like to make it my default use all the time browser now. Besides the rewards I also like the privacy structure within it and key concepts of it.

So to be more concise I have had this problem since I installed it around 3 months ago.

Trying to import setting from Google Chrome.
Google Chrome is up to date

Version 89.0.4389.114 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Brave is up to date
[Version 1.22.71 Chromium: 89.0.4389.114 (Official Build) (64-bit)]

@demortipus,
Very strange behavior indeed. I’m not entirely sure what’s causing the crashes to be honest. Do you have any Chrome windows and/or processes running at the time you click on Import bookmarks and settings? If so they need to be killed before Import will work but it’s unlikely that this is you’re issue.

I can look into other reasons this may be happening but in the meantime, if you’d like to just get at least some of your data from Chrome → Brave, you can do so manually for bookmarks/passwords at least.

Export/Import bookmarks from Chrome:

  1. Open Chrome
  2. Settings --> Bookmarks --> More options --> Export bookmarks
  3. Close Chrome, open Brave and go to Settings --> Bookmarks --> more options --> Import (more options button is under the search icon on the top-right of the page).

Export/Import passwords from Chrome:

  1. Open Chrome
  2. Settings --> Autofill --> Passwords --> More options --> Export
  3. Open Brave
  4. Settings --> Autofill --> Passwords --> More options --> Import

Ok sounds good I apprectiate the help with this. I will try this manual method you advised me of. Thanks sincerely for your assistance and time.

Exactly the same problem. Installed Brave about an hour ago, was looking to switch from Chrome, but will delay until I’m sure it won’t be crashing on me for no reason. It’s not the inability to just transfer data that bothers me honestly, I could probably find the time to do it manually. But that it crashes with no warning, with no error or lead that might help me troubleshoot is an issue and doesn’t serve as a good introduction to the browser.

Also, I did close Chrome beforehand, and as far as Task Manager is aware I don’t currently have any Chrome processes running. Haven’t created a New Profile thought, not sure what I would ever need/want one for if I don’t plan on using Brave Rewards/Wallet.

Also: " 1. Close Chrome, open Brave and go to Settings --> Bookmarks --> more options --> Import (more options button is under the search icon on the top-right of the page)."
" 1. Settings --> Autofill --> Passwords --> More options --> Import"

The passwords one seems to work fine, but trying to import bookmarks crashes all the same whether it be from the settings menu, from the settings page, or from clicking the import option on my empty bookmarks bar.
