How does a creator check their balance after the sunsetting of vBAT?

Maybe I’m misunderstanding something, after logging into my brave creators account, but it no longer shows a balance there.

Am I supposed to connect it to the browser some how?
Am I supposed to just trust brave implicitly to pay out an appropriate amount of tokens to each creator?
Is there any reason that when the browser connects to a creator connected uphold account it can’t automatically detect that?

  1. vBAT has been sunset, so that doesn’t exist anymore. https://brave.com/vbat-sunset/ If you never linked your Creators account to receive BAT, then I’m not sure how that works. I know Creators had more time than Rewards, but uncertain of timeframe and all.

  2. Creators and Rewards is different. Creators don’t link to browser.

  3. Overall things are leaning to on-chain tipping. So you’d just be able to see the tx and be able to see it sent or received. People sending via Uphold don’t get that but you would get info like below when you check your Uphold account. I sent 1 BAT, but you see Brave took their 5% and the 0.95 then was sent to the Creator. But yes, it then becomes a matter of trust.

I’m going to need you to be more clear on what you’re asking here. I get like 3 different questions from this in reading, not sure what specifically you are getting at.

I did link my creators account to uphold quite a long time ago, and it is still connected. My last deposit to uphold from the Brave Creator’s program is from October of 2023. It does not look like Brave deposits to Uphold monthly, or there may be some kind of threshold that needs to be meet before a payout occurs.

After the sunsetting of vBAT there is no way to check the amount of payout, or any level of user interaction with the attention system at all. To me it looks like the performance of the system was poor, and vBAT was removed because of the liability it created to pay out a predetermined amount that was promised. Now, it does look like I just have to expect them to keep their word that they will pay out some amount to my creator account eventually.

Is there any reason that when the browser connects to a creator connected uphold account it can’t automatically detect that?

I guess this is moreso a statement that the creator account should be connected to brave, and that creator payouts should go to or be otherwise viewable from the browser window. Perhaps even fully integrated into the rewards account.

Regardless, I have no longer have incentive to interact with the Brave Creator program. Its current appearance to me is that it doesn’t do anything. Its status can’t be tracked.

  • I don’t know how many times my creator profiles were viewed.
  • I don’t know how much attention or watch time has been accrued.
  • I don’t know how much I have earned if I have earned anything at all.
  • I don’t know the rate of payouts.
  • I am not incentivized to get others to use brave to earn more.

I remember there being a referral program which payed out BAT to bring people into the brave ecosystem, paid out under the creator program.

It might even be worse than I realize, as I have several thousand watch hours on my youtube channel each month. It might be that I have actually earned nothing from brave creators. Which would show to me that the ecosystem for Brave Creators is long dead, and that nobody interacts with it anymore.

There are literally no metrics except for the future expectation of a deposit to the Uphold account maybe possibly if you earned enough, but we aren’t going to tell you how much that is nor how much you have.

Edit: Additional evidence for this sentiment is supported by the fact that creators program growth has entirely halted since October 31st 2023.

Which you can find at https://brave.com/transparency/

Correct, while things were still new. Then it was discontinued when growth occurred. That ended in 2020, as you can see at https://brave.com/blog/referral-program-changes/ -EDIT- Actually, should have linked https://brave.com/blog/referral-program-update/ but close enough, lol.

Honestly been a while since I messed with it and most tips I’ve been receiving are on-chain. I think the way they have it now is it no longer accrues for monthly payouts. I’m wanting to say it instead just immediately gets sent and arrives. This was one of the major changes since the sunsetting of vBAT, which would correlate with you having last received around October 2023 when they did the sunsetting.

Not through referrals, but if they were to earn BAT and tip you, then you would. Question is whether they’d just keep for themselves or if they’d contribute.

Actually, I am going to tag in @Evan123 to see if he can perhaps address some of the things you have mentioned in your original post on the topic as well as your follow-up. And will also tag in @chriscat in case he has anything to add, but primarily so he can see some of your feedback.
