Grey background overlay on screen. Tried to disable graphics acceleration which was earlier hardware acceleration

Grey background overlay on screen.
When I open some web pages, Brave creates a semi-transparent grey overlay shade over the entire page. The page is still legible, but there is no pop-up dialogue or anything that I could click to remove the shade.

I found an earlier report of the problem where the person noted that this can be solved by disabling hardware acceleration(which now is graphics acceleration) but that didn’t work.

  • Brave Browser version
    1.71.123

  • Computing Device
    Laptop

  • Computing Device Operating system
    windows

  • Does your issue occur at all websites or just some?
    some

  • Might you mention at least one such website?
    www.freemans.com

  • What are your Brave Browser Shields settings, when at that website?

  • Have you tried to use a different Brave Browser Profile, for testing the issue; and what were your findings?
Still the same grey background overlay

@Mrooie Could you please help on this

Please edit your Original Post, above, to include:

  • Brave Browser version
  • Computing Device
  • Computing Device Operating system

And:

  • Does your issue occur at all websites or just some?
  • Might you mention at least one such website?
  • What are your Brave Browser Shields settings, when at that website?
  • Have you tried to use a different Brave Browser Profile, for testing the issue; and what were your findings?

Sorry, it was 5 yrs ago and the solution worked for me. o_o
No other problems with Brave since then.

Any suggestion now on this issue?

@hema just a quick FYI, when you create a topic there is a template that gets generated. When you chose this category, it should have been template like below:

Description of the issue:

Exact URL of the website in question:

Screenshot of the ad as it appears in Brave:

Did the issue present with default Shields settings? (yes/no)

Does the site function as expected when Shields are turned off?

Does the ad appear when using a Private window as well? (yes/no)

What OS are you using when you see the ad?

Brave version (check About Brave):

The reason why I’m mentioning this is it seems you deleted it and did not provide the details. One of the important parts of this was that it asks you if it works with Shields off. In testing, the answer to that would be yes (though depending on what you’ve done, might have to clear cookies for the site first).

The gray overlay that appears on websites tends to be because of the cookie banner they have, which Brave blocks by default. Some websites try to force users to interact with it. Turning off Shields and then going to the site would result in seeing the below:

Then whether you Reject All or Accept All, it loads and can be used as normal. You could even activate Shields once again after. This shouldn’t be an issue and will be something that @fanboynz or others will adjust the Shields filters for here in the future, but at least is an explanation of what’s going on.

@saoiray Thank you.

Then this is the browser behavior rather than website behavior?

@hema not really. It’s the website trying to force people to accept cookies. If you automatically hide/dismiss the prompt, then they block access to their website. The default behavior in Shields is to block these prompts, as often they don’t respect user choice and will use it to grant themselves the ability to invade your privacy.

That means the issue is/was happening because of the way the website is coded. Specifically is the website trying to track users. I mean, if you disable protections and let them track you (invade your privacy), then it works just fine. But still would say it’s website issue more than I would browser behavior.

@Saoiray Thankyou for the answers
