Gmail.com complains "too many redirects"

Gmail.com complains “too many redirects”, suggests flushing cookies (which doesn’t help). A few hours ago, it would load the attractive ‘new’ web version without a hitch. Same network, same device (a large Samsung Android notepad), … is Google sabotaging the web version in Android browsers to keep people in the app? I really don’t like apps, especially on a 15" screen. Don’t want to access email in a crude app designed for candy bar sized phones.
