Flag to keep Manifest V2 extensions alive?

At Github I noticed what appears to be a Chrome flag that will prevent Manifest V2 extensions from being deprecated or becoming fully unusable.

Allow legacy extension manifest versions

I haven’t so far been able to locate any equivalent in Brave. Is there one?

The Marvellous Suspender is the relevant extension (it will likely not be upgraded for V3).

Thanks.

@289wk… Thanks, doesn’t appear to clarify the current situation, though.

As far as I know, Brave has only taken steps to preserve the life of a limited number of V2 extensions. If it can keep The Marvellous Suspender alive, it will make a lot of people happy. Probably even bring new users to Brave (e.g., those currently using TMS under Chrome).

Same exact one exists in Brave. Keep in mind that this is going to go away in the future.

@Saoiray… Thanks. That’s odd. I searched for the exact string on that webpage and got nothing.

Keep in mind that this is going to go away in the future.

I thought it was intended to keep extensions not compatible with V3 functional (in Brave, not necessarily in Chrome). Maybe I’m misunderstanding?

Yeah, it’s like that for all Chromium browsers but it’s unlikely to remain. Often they just temporarily hang to provide some functionality during changes.

As to what Brave is doing, they are pretty much doing a collaboration with some of the extension developers to keep a “best effort” maintenance of some. These are primarily more requested extensions like uBlock Origin and other privacy ones.

We’d have to tag in @Mattches to see if he can give more details on all of that and perhaps answer your question on the extension you like.

Though also let me ask, what is it that The Marvelous Suspender does that you’re finding useful?

what is it that The Marvelous Suspender does that you’re finding useful?

Check out this discussion thread at Github, and you will get a sense of why so many want to keep The Marvellous Suspender alive, and why none of the available alternatives substitute for it:

If Brave can provide a lifeline for the developer, @gioxx – i.e, by extending the life of TMS beyond the final deprecation date (expected sometime this month) as it’s doing with other extensions – the developer may be able to find the level of collaboration he needs to update it for V3. (Maybe he’ll even find it here!.. Non si sa mai.)

In my case, as a non-developer general user, I like the greater control TMS gives the user over suspension as well as some specific features, such as making backing up all windows & tabs to an html document a cinch that can be done with a single click within the extension.

And not least of all, there is a consistent consensus of trust in this developer, also evident in the thread.

@Mattches … Are there specific requirements/qualifications related to the browser extensions whose functionality Brave is working to maintain under MV2?

Is there a ‘suggestion box’ for extensions that might be included?
