Email links not working on Windows 10 desktop

When I click on links in email they don’t work

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. open site with a link to a contact email
  2. click on the highlighted link
  3. nothing happens.
  4. tested on Android phone it works
  5. in the Windows desktop setting I have Brave as my default email app
  6. I use Proton mail as my email client

Expected result:
To have Proton mail open

**Brave Version: Version 1.18.78 Chromium: 87.0.4280.141 (Official Build) (64-bit)
