Shortcuts on desktop and email links are not working

clicking on links does nothing:

If I click on links on my desktop or in my emails. Brave browser will not open.
If I set the default browser to any other browser including Chrome the links will then open.
I try then setting it back to Brave and they won’t open.

In the Windows search bar, type in and select Choose a default app for each type of file. Here, search for .html files and confirm that Brave is set to the default app here. If not, change it to Brave. If it already is, try changing it to something else (or nothing) and then changing it back to Brave once again.
