I see sponsored images by default, I was wondering if we should get pay for that. And do I have to do something specific to get the extra BAT or just open new tabs?

You do get payed for sponsored images. The exact amount of BAT you get for viewing sponsored images is calculated behind the scenes and is payed out along with your monthly earnings on the 5th of the month.
