Dark mode resests after browser is closed

If you set Dark or use GTK (with a dark theme) it doesn’t keep this preference when you go back into brave. It will show GTK or Dark but it’s still Light theme anyway.

This has been happening since update to 1.52.117 on Linux Mint 21. Was working previously. Both in software manager Flatpak (brave) or command line install Flatpak (brave-browser).

I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling my Brave Flatpaks both through the Software Manager GUI in Linux Mint 21.1 and also via the Command Line Installer from the Brave Repository. Same problem.

Also see other users having the issue as mentioned here:

Thank you.

The same thing happens to me too, whenever I close Brave and open it again it stays in Light mode, the dark mode does not save, whether using the Classic Theme or the GTK Theme.

Brave: 1.53.76
Linux Mint: 21.1

Linux Mint 21.1. Kernel 5.15.0-73-generic. Brave browser keeps freezing. I’ve had to use xkill many times since the update from 1.51.118 to 1.52.117. Brave always reverts back to light theme even when dark theme is enabled. I have to switch from dark to light then back to dark in order to correct the theme. These crashes have resulted to a video quality report from Google while using YouTube. https://www.google.com/get/videoqualityreport/?v=gWFlpCBMyIk

Bah, they didn’t move over in order. Oh well, it is what it is. I merged the three primary topics over into this one just so it’s easier for everyone to track.

Description of the issue:
Linux Mint systems seem to display extensions and web pages in light mode, even though Dark Mode is enabled. This can be counter acted by setting the browser to Light Mode and back to Dark Mode, but this will be reset once the browser is closed and opened again.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Open browser (with cookies set to auto delete on browser closing beforehand)
  2. Open any extension or website that supports dark mode theme (in my case 1Password)
  3. See that the drawn color is white instead of black
  4. Go to settings and see that Dark Mode is indeed enabled
  5. Set the setting to Light and then back to Dark to have everything display properly, until browser closing and opening again

Expected result:
All web pages and extensions that support Dark Mode should display the proper themes

Brave Version( check About Brave):
1.52.117

Additional Information:
Issue might be limited to Linux (Mint) systems. Both my PC and laptop run Linux Mint 21 and both have this issue after the most recent update.

I’ve tagged a couple of team members in the thread to hopefully take a closer look. Thank you all for reporting

Closely following this one also: after using Brave a long time, this one pulled me into the forum  Happy to help however needed to get the browser to open Dark again.

This is incredibly irritating. Somebody needs to address this problem.

The Dark option in color selection does not hold. After each and every restart of the browser the Appearance/color option reverts to light.

v1.52.122 doesn’t fix the problem. just updated, reopened brave and light mode brightness. I’ll try rebooting, but I’m not holding my breath.

Just updated to v1.52.117 on Linux Mint 21.1 and no change.

Hack to get around the toolbar changing to Light ( which is the most jarring part so far ) is to switch to GTK for a while:

I was also having this issue and created an account just to +1 here.

Arch Linux
Kernel: Linux 6.3.5-arch1-1
Brave Browser 114.1.52.117

Thanks guys.

Hello everyone

the release note for version 1.52.122 does not mention it fix it so do not expect it to be solved yet

you can keep track the github issue here https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/30766 to see the update about the issue

and they asking about if someone has chrome and can check if he/she has the issue or it only brave that affected by that issue

and have a nice day everyone

When opening Brave 1.54.38 it opens with “light” theme but is showing the “dark” theme under settings. I have to click dark, then light, then dark again to maintain the dark theme but it only lasts while in that incident of brave. This happens on both Fedora Rawhide and Fedora release.

Is this just a Linux Mint issue or GTK issue? I’m also on Mint and it’s doing the same thing here. Hasn’t been fixed in latest update. :frowning:

I also have the same issue, which is very annoying. Tried many things, but nothing worked. Hope they fix this soon…
