Can't import Chrome Favorites even though Chrome is closed

It said I needed to close all Chrome windows; so I did and it still says:

Close Chrome
To finish importing, close all Chrome windows.

What can I do ?

Welcome to the community @aBruck.

Please make sure there’s no Chrome process running in the background. You can open Task Maanger to make sure there’s no process running.

Let me know if it’s still not working.

There was nothing in Task Manager

I had to restart the computer and start Brave before Chrome to get it to work

Hey Admins,

I’m having the same problem. I can’t import bookmarks and passwords(most important) from Chrome to Brave browser. It keeps saying to close Chrome windows even though they are closed. What can we do ?

shut chrome and restart

after you restart open Brave before doing anything else and try again

Tried as you said but nothing changed…

Also be sure Hangouts isn’t set to start on boot. That threw me for some time. It counts as a Chrome process.

I’m having the same problem. Have tried closing all processes manually, and shutting down/ restarting with no success.

@luciano,
What operating system are you using?

@aBruck,
Do you have any additional Brave processes running in the background? Additionally, do you have any extensions installed in Brave?

But I did have a severe security breech after installing Brave: someone took over my computer and was searching, for what is look like, cryptocurrency wallets and passwords.

Luckily, I was at the computer, talking on the phone and watching the screen, and saw the pointer moving all by itself, opening and closing sites, etc.

I quickly turned the computer off, installed Malwarebytes and Avast, in addition to the MS Firewalls etc that were already on the computer.

I stopped using Brave and it never happened again.

Could be coincidence; maybe I’ll try Brave again someday …

Brand new computer and I am still having this problem. I will not use Brave if I cannot import my passwords, bookmarks from Chrome. Why is no one doing something about fixing this bug??? No suggestions worked for me nor for any of the others seen commenting here. Can someone fix this bug, please???

I searched on Bing " Change which apps run automatically at startup in Windows 10". I found out that Chrome started automatically on boot up, so I used these instructions to disable it. Bookmarks imported first try after disabling Chrome on start up.

@Rotor,
Very interesting find.
For anyone else still experiencing this issue, please test this to see if it resolves your issue.

I found numerous occurrences of chrome [associated with crashed extensions] active under task manager.

Right click on the START icon [lower left of screen] choose TASK MANAGER. Once open, you should see the active programs … but … if you go to the lower left of the task manager box, you should see “More details”.

Click that and you should see under the PROCESSES tab ALL active processes associated with programs.

I had 10-15 items labeled “chrome …”. When clicking END TASK, boxes would open in the lower right of the screen describing what the process was associated with … mostly “crashed extensions”. You may have to repeatedly click on same task to finally close all.

Closing each of them, I was able to immediately download ALL bookmarks from my old chrome environment!!

The Brave Browser seems like a great alternative to the Chrome Browser [which I have enjoyed and used exclusively for years].

Hope this is of help.

Good luck, happy browsing,

Ray H.
