"Camera failed" in Google Meet

Description of the issue:
Whenever I use Google Meet and try to switch on my laptop’s webcam, it shows an error “Camera Failed”. This happens both in the settings menu outside a meeting as well as while trying to use the camera in a meeting.

I have already tried multiple suggestions I saw on similar posts, to be specific:

  • I can confirm that my webcam is working all right and camera access settings are NOT disabled, neither in windows settings nor in the site setting of the brave browser. I’m able to use Google meet on Chrome and other camera-oriented services on my laptop without any error (like Zoom meetings or camera app).

  • All the drivers in my Laptop are updated including the latest version of Windows 10. My Brave browser version is the most recent stable version as well.

  • The hangouts component setting in Brave is also switched on. I’ve also tried disabling Fingerprint Blocking. None of it solved the problem either.

  • I’ve tried shields down on Google Meet.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Go to meet.google.com (Google Meet)
  2. Click on the settings button on the home page and go to the video tab.
  3. Wait for a little while for it to try to start the camera.

Expected result: Google Meet shows the error “Camera failed”

Brave Version: V1.23.75

Additional Information:
PC specs: i7 8th gen, 8 GB RAM, Nvidia GTX 1050ti, Windows 10.

The mic and screen share work completely fine in Google Meet on the Brave Browser. The problem is only the webcam.

Is there anyone else that is facing this issue or knows how it can be resolved?
