Bug Report - Opening PDF documents in Brave causes browser to freeze/hang/beachball

Description of the issue:

Opening a PDF document within the browser (as a tab) eventually causes Brave to freeze/hang/beachball

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Open a PDF document in browser
  2. Bounce around between other tabs and/or windows you have open
  3. Eventually, coming back to Brave, it will be frozen and you will get a beachball

Expected result:

The expected result is that opening a PDF with the browser, keeping it open, and switching between windows/monitors/tabs/tab groups should not cause the entire browser to freeze

Brave Version( check About Brave):

Version 1.62.156 Chromium: 121.0.6167.139 (Official Build) (arm64)

Additional Information:

Mac Mini 2020 M1 8GB
macOS Sonoma 14.2.1

I typically have many tabs open at any given time, this includes inside and outside of various groups of tabs (I work in tech support, so it’s easy to organize tickets this way). The only way to resolve this is to force quit the browser and relaunch.

This worked no problem before, and I noticed it occurring about 1-2 months ago - this is specific as I can be about the timeline at the moment.

Happens to me too, with different PDF files - both locally hosted and web-hosted. Multiple tabs usually open. Have to force quit brave once it locks up. Version 1.62.162 Chromium: 121.0.6167.164 (Official Build) (arm64) . macbook pro, Apple M2 Max. Sonoma 14.3.1 (23D60)

This is what I did to solve my issue with opening PDFs on Windows using Brave. I went to Extensions and disabled the extensions for PDFs. I had two of them. One was for the professional version of PDF edit and the other was the PDF viewer PDF JS. After doing this, I was able to click on any icon with the PDF logo and it opened perfectly. Good luck, it might work on Mac but I can’t tell if the beachball incident would be the same. That would be like the spinning circle (computer thinking syndrome) in Windows systems.
