Browser missing text and buttons

Description of the issue:
I am working on a Mac Mini M1, Big Sur 11.2.3 and my desktop browser is inexplicably missing text in places and icons / button are only partially visible. When I type urls in toolbar I can visit site but can’t see the text I’m typing, can send Gmail but can’t see the button, etc. Also random black squares appearing at times. No major changes to my machine other than moving some files onto an external hard drive, which is around when this started. Firefox and Safari work fine. I deleted the browser and updated, choosing M1 version and problems has persisted.

How can this issue be reproduced?

go to brave://settings/system and turn off hardware acceleration
