Brave processes remain open after closing Brave

Description of the issue:
When I close Brave on Windows 10, multiple processes running under the Brave name remain open. While the main process disappears from the Process tab of Task Manager, I still see 6-8 processes under the Details tab.
Sometimes, I can close all remaining processes by just closing one of the left behind processes, but at other times, I have to close all left behind processes one by one.

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): 1. 2. 3.

  1. Run Brave.
  2. Close Brave
  3. Start Task Manager
  4. Validate that Brave is closed on Process tab
  5. See left behind processes on Details tab
  6. Close left behind Brave processes on Details tab

Actual Result (gifs and screenshots are welcome!):
I am not sure if a screenshot of Task Manager will help, but I am happy to post one as needed.

Expected result:
All processes related to Brave should close once Brave has been closed.

Reproduces how often:
This happens every time. I also noticed that the amount of left behind processes slowly increases if I open and close Brave multiple times.

Operating System and Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu):
Windows 10 / Brave Version 0.63.48 Chromium: 74.0.3729.108 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Additional Information:
I am suspicious that this behavior is related to extensions not properly closing upon exit. As such, I am providing a list of my extensions:

  • Forecast Fox (fix version)
  • Google Translate
  • Honey
  • IDM Integration Module
  • Last Pass
  • Save to Pocket
  • Tab Session Manager

I believe these are pretty common extensions.

@jst68 can you try disable “Continue running background apps when Brave is closed” under Brave’s Settings > System and see if it can solve your issue.

Thanks,

Yes, you are right.

I actually discovered the same shortly after posting, but couldn’t close or update it because it was under review.

Anyhow, it is probably good to have this here in the forum. :grinning:

Great browser by the way!
